I just noticed the Democrats/Liberals have a group.

There is no group for Republicans/Conservatives. Why?

Because they have the Current Events & Politics forum.

I have decided to stay away from there. Friends have also chosen to do the same. Why? Because almost everyone who posts there is a right-wing, conservative person. And among them is a core group of nasty folks who insult anyone who disagrees.

Several friends whom I have met here, who also share the Democratic, Liberal, Progressive values, have left. I have communicated with several of these folks by email and when then left, they said goodbye to me privately and stated they were weary of the tone in the forums. They were seeking intelligent discussion and seeking men/women of similar values and were not successful on DH. I miss them and their posts.

What does this say about the DH site?

What does it say about the majority of DH members/posters?

A conservative DH friend sent me a message that she had encountered some very uncivil men who saw her political choice (Republican Conservative) on her profile. She was considering leaving that lin empty to avoid meeting these angry white men.

Your thoughts?

Peace, Pam

Good thread, Pam. I've been thinking about this alot too. I think we have to admit that this is a site of largely conservative people. And I think that most are extremely conservative! Religion and isolationism are rampant among these folks. I don't know what the answer for us is but there are just not many threads that interest me.

I'm glad you have decided to quit the "current events" forum. I think it just made me crazy going in there. I just find it unbelievable that there is SO much hate out there. No wonder we have all kinds of problems in the world. I really didn't realize that people feel the way they do. Maybe I am just blind to common opinions. I thought I was fairly well read and I sure watch MSNBC, CNN, etc. I even watch FOX once in a while just to see what the other side thinks. There people take the cake!!

Wish we could start a liberal section where those who would like could come in from the shadows and enjoy some interesting conversation.

Good to hear from you...have you heard anything out of Yankee? Haven't heard from that boy in months.

They also cross over to the 50's and the 60's groups.

Anywhere where they can repeat their bigotry.

Hey Pam, Jeannie & Walter....There's just about no activity on the Dems/Liberals group (except for us three brilliant minds)
I don't know what would be the answer to try to get more to join us in discussion. Maybe there are just too few of us on DH. I love discussing politics with non-Democrats, too. I wish it was possible to do politely on DH. My son-in-law is a staunch Republican, and he likes discussing politics with me. I get a kick out of it, and we're respectful of each other's feelings.

I totally understand, Coolchick! I love to discuss politics too but you can't do that around here. Man, I tried and I paid for it! Never, never again.

You know, I also think that it's easier to be horrible to others when you know you don't have to look them in the eye. I'll bet alot of these people would never act this way in public. What do you think?

Oh yes they do! Texas and Louisiana have wayyy too many Reps and I can't have a decent conversation with any of them without them going Linda Blair on me wanting to throw up green and rotate their heads 360!

Oh, gee, that's awful!! I know a few of those people too. Seems as I've grown older I tend to stay away from the ones I know or we just don't mention politics! Ha! That can really be ugly. But, really when I think about it, they really never reverted to name calling...just would get pretty lathered up about whatever the suject was. They didn't ever tell me I was a communist or a moron. Gee, I wonder what they were thinking!! Ha!

Like you all, I also love to talk politics and can do so with some folks in my real life (as opposed to my cyber life). And I can handle myself well enough in those conversations to steer them away from anger and keep it friendly, albeit spirited.

But, here on DH, these folks are not very nice. Just disagreeing with them invites insults. I was called a c*nt by a "gentleman" in Tennessee just for stating my opinion. I have routinely had my looks, intelligence and femininity insulted in those threads.

And just write an intelligent sentence, using correct grammar, spelling and punctuation, and occasionally using multi-syllabic words, and you are called an elitist. Excuse me for applying myself, working hard, learning a few things and earning my degrees! NOT! I will apologize to none of those ingrates. Many of them cannot write complete thoughts in standard English. And cannot do it without generous use of clipart, cut & pastes, and other junk that reflect other people's thoughts.

I agree with you that many say things here they would not say directly to people's faces. But I'm guessing some of these folks are as disagreeable and nasty in person as they are in cyberspace.

I hope we can reach out to others to join us here. I don't really want to only talk to people who agree with me, but given the setup on DH, we don't have any choice. The Current Events & Politics forum, inhabited by so many rabid posters, requires shots to even enter!

Any ideas how we can expand the discussion? I love hearing from all of you. Lakc, nice to meet you. Jeannie, coolchick, and Walter, you know I love you!

Jeannie, I have no idea where Yankee is. Don't have any way to reach out to him except in DH.

Peace to you all, Pam

Welcome, lakc. I don't know about Louisiana, but I know you're right about many of the Republicans in Texas. My experience in talking with most of them is - number one - I don't even have to bring up politics, because they will. None have ever said derogatory things about me to my face. They do say derogatory things about any Democratic candidate or office-holder. What's weird is, until I inform them I'm a Democrat and a liberal - they assume I will agree with them. I mean, they all seem to assume that everyone thinks like them. I'm so glad the Presidential election is over, because they were ranting and raving really bad leading up to it - especially when they started to see they were on the losing end. Geez, I wish I had a nickel for every time I heard that Obama was going to lead us to ruin. Pam, I think that in cyberspace (not face-to-face) is where we get most of the personal attacks (being called a moron, or worse). I'm so sorry you were subjected to being called those horrible names.

Hey Coolchick......I have the same problem wrt everyone assuming I'm a Rep. Since I am a Christian, they assume I vote right. I truly try to separate the two. I won't get into all of it here but between their bias opinions and jokes.....I've had enough emails forwarded from "friends" who don't talk to me otherwise.

lakc, I know what you mean about the emails. I've informed several people to stop sending me offensive political emails & jokes. I do enjoy a good joke, but not if it involves berating a person or group. Had a coworker forward me an offensive joke about Barack Obama - and she knew I was a supporter of his. I went to ask her why, and she said she knew I had a good sense of humor and would appreciate the joke. I told her I didn't consider that to be a joke - "Obama/Osama" & muslim tie-in. Told her I found it offensive, and (so far) she's stopped forwarding me anything like that.
