I'm a winer!
Ha ha ha.
But I like the fruit wines and a few grape.
One wine you need to try is one that was made from the Frontenac grape. You'll swear the wine was made from 3 fruits!

St. James's Winery in St. James MO has some nice inexpensive wines, 2 of my favorites are the Velvet Red and Blackberry. My neighbor gave me a bottle of the Velvet Red for Christmas, saving it for a road trip in April to Lake of the Ozarks, a twice a year tradition with one of my friends. We call it our working vacation. Been doing it 4 years now.
I am not normally much of a wine drinker, don't care for the dry ones, and some give me migraines, so I am pretty cautious.
I do make some dynamite homemade kahlua.....the longer it ages, the smoother it gets....and more potent. Very good on chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream too
Bad experience with wine in high school would be too much Boone's Farm Strawberry Hill - yuck!!!

Hey Vet- that is the REAL thing. One of the good ole boys talks about it all the time on the Nascar channel. Somehow they mix apple cider, (the chunky kind) in with it and then let that sit a while. I figure one of the Southerners will know the recipe, or a place to stumble upon it?

Last year I bought a bottle of peach wine from a place that bottles it themselves and while i was in their establishment I also bought a bottle of champagne and you can put 10% wine to 90% champagne and maybe its called a spritzer after that not real sure but it sure was good but I like champagne anyway so the peach flavor just made it better! Yeah I also have a bottle of wine (yellow tail) for tomorrow night and so does vicki! I can see now I better bring a tee shirt to sleep in had to borrow one last time including a bed! LOL I don't know what vicki bought though.
Yellow tail is a reisling type wine. Light a fruity

There is a winery in Mackinaw, IL ... pretty close to some of you. It is a great place in the summer and fall ... they have a pond and have music on Friday and Saturday night.
Also, Raven ... I have heard moonshine called "country water".

I have never been a wine drinker since it gives me a headache. I did buy a bottle of Moscato the other day since it had been years since I had drank any wine. I drank one glass and woke later with a headache. The wine was good though.
I know Anne said wine gives her a headache also so what causes this.
And do you know they do not have a clear reason for this.
But,
So those that get the wine headaches
Cheap wine will cause a headache more than expensive ones.
Sulfa is used to make wine. Sulfa allergies
Tannins, the compounds in wine that come from the skin and seeds. The Harvard Health Letter notes several well-controlled experiments showing that tannins in the blood cause the release of the enzyme serotonin, which in high levels can cause headaches in people who already suffer from migraines.
Some studies point to histamines in wine as being the cause of allergic-type reactions, especially headaches.
Red may give you a headache and white may not and vise versa
So I guess you just have to experiment and maybe find one that does not cause the headache.
And I love Kaluha

Raven ... it was a Virginia idiom
I did not know we had so many wineries in Illinois ... maybe we surpass France and Italy.
Interesting, Moonshadow ... I have always believed that we have different metabolisms and chemincal makeup so what medication, foods, or beverages that may be good for one is terrible for another. So when someone writes that a glass of wine is good for the heart, it may not be good for the head.

Wow moon I had no idea about all that stuff in wine or that it gave people headaches either. The place I bought that peach wine at was state street winery an bistro in atkinson, IL. Discripton of a riesling: Muskey, sweet, and light this wine is perfect as an aperitif or to accompany a strong cheese. Not a wine drinker here either but on occasion do try different ones.

Sulphites are present in all wines and are formed as a natural product of the fermentation process, and many wine producers add sulfur dioxide in order to help preserve wine. Sulfur dioxide is also added to foods such as dried apricots and orange juice. The level of added sulfites varies, and some wines have been marketed with low sulfite content. Sulphites in wine can cause some people, particularly those with asthma, to have adverse reactions.
Red wine contains more polyphenols than white wine, and these are thought to be particularly protective against cardiovascular disease.
A chemical in red wine called resveratrol has been shown to have both cardioprotective and chemoprotective effects.

I think wine is an aquired taste really. I like whites better than reds, for the most part. It took a long time for me to enjoy wine. Once i started serious cooking, and consulted those in the know about paring. Wine became something more than bitter liquid for me. Please understand this is years in the comming, just like cooking. But, i no longer doubt that there is more to wine than i originaly thought.
