LOL. Too funny!! I don't think I'd have opened a thread that said, "My mattress has diarrhea!! You're brave to have even opened the thread....but you were no help whatsoever to me!!!

I am hoping that it is his dog food. When we first got him, we fed him Beneful. Someone gave me a bag of Kibbles & Bits that has some little white pieces in it supposedly to help freshen dogs breath. Anyway, when the Beneful ran out, we started feeding him the Kibbles & Bits. So today after church, I bought a bag of Beneful and am hoping the problem clears itself up in a couple of days of feeding him Beneful again.

Meanwhile, if anyone has any suggestions, please let me know.

when changing foods, you always need to change it gradually... like 1/4 of the normal amount of new food to 3/4 old food, increase new food by 1/4 every week until you have gotten to 100% new food....

when switching back, make it like 50/50 so that you don't put his tummy into to much of an uproar.

Good luck

You can give a dog immodium. Give a small dog 1/4 tablet, a medium dog 1/2 tablet & large dog 1 tablet. That can help get the diarrhea under control. However, there are other issues to think about. Dehydration can be a serious situation. Make sure the dog is getting enough fresh, clean water to drink. Also, the cause of the gastrointestinal upset needs to be determined. In many cases, it's a simple case of them eating something they shouldn't have. If there's a chance your dog ingested something poisonous, or has a blockage in its intestines from eating a small toy or other dangerous item, an emergency vet visit is in order. Also, explosive diarrhea is a sign of something serious. If the diarrhea is accompanied by lethargy, refusal to eat/drink, or any other potentially serious symptoms, a vet is your best bet.

Right now, I'm assuming (and hoping) that it's the Kibbles & Bits that has made him sick because he didn't have diarrhea until he started eating that food. We mix his dry dog food w/ a little bit of canned Alpo, so I just switched him back to Beneful and canned Alpo.

He doesn't act sick. He seems happy and healthy other than the diarrhea. He has plenty of fresh water and drinks it, but doesn't seem to be drinking more than normal.

I'm hoping that it will clear up in a day or two. If it's not better by tomorrow, I'll try the imodium or pepto.

I really can't afford to take him to the vet, but of course I'll figure out a way if I have to. Hopeing I can resolve the issue w/ the dog food.

A friend told me that canned dog food can cause diarrhea, but we've had him since Feb 13 and this is the first time he's developed diarrhea. If the canned dog food was the problem, wouldn't it have happened sooner?

There may be a way to get advice without going to the vet. Is there an SPCA near you? Or a teaching vet hospital?
Or a library? I saw books at the library, very detailed, on dog and cat health, problems, treatments. It is also
possible that you might have to borrow money, use the VISA, or find a vet who will take payments... if the problem
is not resolved quickly on its own, that is what I would do.

Give your dog some canned pumpkin. It was vet-recommenden for my maltese. Usually takes a day to work thru their system, but works like a charm for both diarrhea and constipation.

Just saw what you are feeding your pup! Get her off the beneful...one of the worst pet foods out there. Feed her Science Diet canned chicken flavor and some Natures Best dry dog food-small bites(also Science Diet); mix the canned pumpkin in with the canned food. I have several Maltese; one with special needs (kidney issues). Beneful was one of the dog food's using contaminated meal from China! I know the pumpkin may sound like a strange remedy, but it works like a charm.

One episode of diarrhea or has it gone one for a day or so? More than one episode, with hold food for at least 12-24 hours to let the digestive system rest and recover. Diarrhea can cause inflammation. He can have water. It is very possible that the sudden change in food is what gave him the problem. if you are feeding only one thing all the time, change should usually be done gradually.

Can I comment on the foods you are feeding? Beneful, Kibbles and Bits and even the Science Diet that someone suggested are all crap foods. You are basically raising your dog on Twinkies. They are ladden with wheat, corn and glutens. These are cheap fillers and the glutens are vegetable proteins so that the nutritional label can read a higher % of protein. The "meat" that is in these foods is scrap garbage or rendered slurry. The protein level is so low and indigestable that glutens are added to raise the protein level. Meat is often not even the first ingredient. Or it says meat meal or byproducts. Garbage. Yes, expensive Science Diet is in the same catagory, I don't care what vets say. Hills (the makers of SD) spends 28 MILLION dollars advertising to vets alone to push their food. Vets get NO nutritional training in college. Some take a 3 week mini course given by...you guessed it, Hills. Some varieties of SD also still have ethoxyquin in them which is a preservative banned for human food consumption because it causes liver failure.

The first ingredient in your food should be a pure meat: chicken, beef, lamb, etc. There should be NO wheat, corn or glutens. The average dog is allergic to wheat and corn. Allergies show up as poor skin or coat, chronic ear infections, yeast over growth, arthritis and joint swelling, obesity, poor digestion. Any grains should be high quality carbs like rolled oats, brown rice and barley and other carbs should be sweet potatoes, peas, carrots, cranberries.

To keep digestion in top shape, try feeding several varieties of food, not just one brand. Examples of good foods are Wellness, Merrick, Natural Balance, Eagle Pack, Newman's Own, Nature's Variety, Innova, California Natural, Blue Buffalo to name a few. Hint is that if you can buy it in a grocery store, it's Twinkies!

Edit: dry food is NOT the best diet for a dog. Canned food is closer to their natural diet. The whole thing abotu the teeth is bull. Dry food will scale only about 75% upt the level of the tooth, not the last 25% and not the gumline where scaling is needed the most. And since dry food has a higher level of carbs (somethings dogs do NOT need and is not natural to their diet) it leaves a sticky film on their teeth and causes obesity. Good bones to chew will scale teeth. The best is raw meat to chew. The enzymes in the meat and the chewiness will keep their teeth in great condition.

Diarrhea is the problem...try the canned pumpkin. It works. Feed the dog what you can afford to feed him/her...but the first ingredient should be a protein such as chicken, UNLESS, your pet has a diagnosed medical problem like my maltese; then go with what the vet tells you, but the key to that is to have a good vet. Also, if your dog won't eat it, no matter what brand it is...Merrick etc....it doesn't matter. The dog has to like it.

Update: He's fine now.

I switched his diet for now to a mixture I made of chicken, rice and canned pumpkin. I'm on the hunt for a better quality dog food, but I live in a small town, where there are only grocery stores and dollar stores, so I'll have to venture to a neighboring town to find a pet store. I am going to check our local feed stores first though.

Thanks for the advise. I didn't realize that dogs are allergic to corn and wheat. The FIRST ingedient in Beneful is CORN! The second is "chicken by-product."

Anyway, he's doing so much better and today he has solid bowel movements! Yea!!

Thanks!

Kathy

Glad the little guy is doing better! Feed stores often carry better foods. In my other post I listed several excellent foods.

While these foods cost a little more upfront, your dog winds up eating a little less of them because they are pure nutrition as opposed to junk fillers. In the long run, better nutrition leads to better health and less vet visits! It's the old theory of garbage in, garbage out.

I still stand by my statement that the average vet knows NOTHING about nutrition with the exception of what the pet food companies tell them and these comnpanies have a vested interest in getting the vets to use their food. That includes all the absurd "prescription" diets. Lousy food often CAUSED the dietery problem in the first place. Treating it with more lousy, altered from a natural diet, food, makes no sense to me.

If you experience this in the future make sure the dog remains hydrated - or you'll have to deal with organ breakdown issues.
