what are you wanting to trellis? And are you wanting to have it where you can walk under or through? decorative or just plain cheap?

container garden no bigger than 4 feet. It will be holding zucchini, squash, beans. Not walking under or thru. Functional more than decorative. The winds are gale force up here in Grande Prairie so it would have to be sturdy.

We built a cheap one for wisteria/climbing rose by buying the sections at Home Depot, setting posts in concrete, and
then the trellis, which I painted red. That was in 2004 and it looks great. We built it over an old driveway for a
concrete floor but planted around it and put a little pond area to one side with iris and weeping cherry. What
are you using it for, shade, food, relaxation, etc? And what to climb on it? I also sent off one year for an unassembled metal arched trellis, put it together myself, and I am not a tool person, and then planted two
climbing roses on it and set a bird bath under.
Just read your reply, if it must be sturdy, I would set the post in concrete, not that hard to do. And not in
direction of prevailing winds. We have high winds, too, believe it or not, and 90 per cent blow from north.
Trellis was set next to wall for extra shelter.

I am going to grow zucchini, squash, tomatoes, beans up it. I will look at Home Depot. There is no way to avoid the wind up here. In the location it's going to be in at least. So It will be broadside to the west winds and that way the sun will be able to shine on the produce all day long.

for vegetables we use landscape erosion netting. It is cheap disposable and easy to put up. i dont however know how well it would hold up to wind. Insections of four feet i think it would prolly do alright as long as you have the end stakes or posts securly planted. the netting at the end of the season can easily be taken down and discarded into a gully or washout where it will help stop the erosion problem. you can also use the netting that people sell to put over fruit trees to keep birds out. either way its a pretty cheap quick and functional trellis.

You might try this.If there is any building in your area talk to the builder and ask for scrap remesh [concrete reiforcing wire]. use bolt cutters and cut it into about 4 ft sections and roll them into a cage.cut the ends and fold them back into the other end to make a cage.it works for any veggies and you can use tent pegs to secure it.you can store them and reuse them yr after yr.I've been using mine for 5 yrs and they work great.

You can use the large tomato baskets.
Or two 3/4in sched 40 PVC pipes (cut a 10 footer in half) with thin lath slats screwed into them every 8 to 12 inches. Build like a ladder or X the lath. Use 1/2-in. self tapping screws. Stick some rebar in the ground and put the pipes directly over the rebar. I have a long 15 foot "curved ladder", from the ground to a patio cover, holding a grape vine. 3 years going strong.

those are some good ideas.
Money is limited so I will wander around our local building store to see what they have. And I will bring along your suggestions.
Thanks every body.
BTW: snowed a couple of inches here today. This is spring??? And for this very reason, we do not plant anything until the first week of June.

We use What we call Turkey wire Its relatively strong and about 4 feet in width.
You can cut squares, rectangles, make cages.
