Someone just pointed out to me that if I remarried after age 60 I can maintain my Soc. Sec status!!!! I always thought you lost it if you remarried. After some checking it also looks like I would be able to retain my VA benefits also.

Hi, Liz. Yes, these facts do make life a bit brighter for seniors like myself. I had always been told you lost your benefits upon remarriage so was great getting the facts. maybe I'll meet someone in Nashville this week, ha. Going up with a church group and staying at the Opryland Hotel wed - Friday. Dinner on the Gen. Jackson, Rocketts show and whatever.. Looking forward to it.

Do a search for the SS website and look up widow's benefits. It says if you remarry after 60 you maintain your status. I asked a friend at church who remarried that had been getting hers from her first husband and she confirmed that it did not stop when she remarried. If I am understanding it correctly VA benefits are the same except that you can remarry after 59.

Hi Sunshine,
My deceased husband was retired Air Force. I decided to check on what benefits I would have if and when I retire. Social Security told me that I could get my deceased husband's
ss rather than to file for mine. I was delighted, since it will be double what I would get using mine. Do check on your military benefits; I was told by them if I remarry, I would keep my retirement benefit, but not my tricare. At the time of my dad's death, my step mother drew ss from her previous deceased husband because she got more. If you need phone #s or email addresses to further check on this, please email me.

I would hate to lose the tricare. Since I have 3+ years to go before medicare and have a $10,000 pace maker that will need replacing in a couple of years it's scary. It is also nice not having to pay for my medicine. That's something to check out for sure.

cooltammy..... I believe you get social security benefits for you and the children until one of two things happens, the younger child turns 18 and is no longer in school .... or the younger child turns 19 while in school. My mother continued to get benefits until my brother Jerry turned 19 since he was still in school (college).

Eyes, if you read my earlier post you will see I confirmed it with a friend. She remarried and still receives her 1st hubby's S.S. The key is you remarry after 60.
Now, in the case of a widow with children you are 100% correct. I think I may be in the wrong as I think you were speaking to post above yours. Sorry.

Hi Sunshine
I am on disability, and do not get much from this, when my husband died, I got a little over half of what he was getting. But with my understanding, that when two people get married, the womans pay drops severely,(or which ever makes less) thats why more and more seniors are living together, instead of getting married, so they don't lose any part of what they are getting. I think a person, has to be very careful of the exact wording, in the S.S. widows benefit. at least ways, this is the story here in Kansas.
