Anyone know how to fix this without taking into a shop? Have an old Sony stero with 5-disc changer. Tried the commercial cleaner disk, didn't help.

mustang, I know how frustrating that can be. I had a 3 cd changer that started giving up the ghost about 2 years ago. It used to not be able to read a disc if it was in slot X for some reason (slot X changed from 1, to 2, to 3) periodically and at random. Oh and the volume nob would crank up the volume REGARDLESS of which direction you turned it. I had to resort to using the remote, even if I was standing right in front of it. I'm seriously considering just buying like 10 CD players and keeping them stashed away. I'm fighting the MP3 transition as I think memory chips are MORE prone to corruption of data than CDs. I don't have a suggestion for how to fix your problem sadly. Only thing I do know when it comes to CDs or DVDs for that matter is that when you whip it clean it's better to go in a star pattern from the inside, out rather than around the cd in a circle, as there's a chance your rag/tissue/whatever will additionally scratch the surface while removing gunk, and scratches that go against the grain (that is perpendicular) are easier for the laser to skip over than lengthwise ones.

thanks for the responses...
ollie, yes, i bought the cleaner with the little brushes on it, didn't help. and it does it on new disks as well as old.
yankee, yes, incredibly frustrating. same problem, at first i thought it was just one slot, but as you experienced, its now pretty much random...

well my BEST suggestion is to take your cd player out to an abandonned field and If nothing else, the peace of mind is worth it. How long have you had this particular player for btw?

Take the thing apart and wipe the laser eye with alcohol.
Also observe the mechanical behavior while it is apart.
Gee, and to think I was gonna buy one of those 400 CD jukeboxes.

um... nice thought gazy, but i'm mechanically challenged. i'm not even sure i could get it hooked back up right to the other components if i took it somewhere to be cleaned.
yankee... it has to be about 20 years old...
next question... if i just went and bought a new cd changer, would it be compatabile with my receiver etc.?

what kind of cables/cords did you use to hook it up to your receiver? Describe their size, colour and shape. I'm not much of a techie either, but we'll see what we can figure out.

Well, if it's 20 years old...maybe it's best to retire it. Give it to some geek and see if they can fix it. BTW, you can play CDs in a DVD player as well.
