I can't help but think that a registry cleaner is or should be included with windows. I'm running Windows XP. It has been a long time since I've done a really thorough clean up of my computer which I normally do by backing up my data then reformatting and reloading windows like a new installation. Today I downloaded a few trial versions of registry cleaners and all are telling me that I've got over 1200 registry errors. I hate the flim flam advertising saying they are 100% free downloads then they fix a few errors and to sell me their programs.
What is your opinion of reg cleaners? Do I absolutely need one to clean my registry Obviously this computer is out of whack. It used to run flawlessly for over a year then started getting too hot when running you tubes then it would shut down. Sometimes I can run you tubes with no problem if I close everything I can think of except youtube and firefox.
Is one reg cleaner better than others? What do I need to avoid? FREE is good if it is good for my computer... FREE advice is welcomed!

regsitry cleaner isn't the solution. no matter what program you may try. they will all tell you there are errors. AFTER fresh windows install and nothing else installed yet.
windows itself is not perfect. everytime you install a program there is usually some file that gets rewritten for that program. there's always gonna be some damage from a program installation. BUT, if u uninstall. there will be more damage as more often then not. some critical windows files may get deleted with that program.
when i ran xp. it was common for me to get 3-4 months before doing a wipeout.
i get more life out of vista then i've ever had with xp. but vista was designed different. vista was designed to keep programs out of it's core system so that vista wasn't getting damaged. unlike xp. vista was locked down from programs. so that programs had to make there own files and not touch vista.
i've been running vista since the day it came out and i have been happier then xp. but unlike all the other complaints on the internet becuase they do UPGRADES. i only do fresh installs. my whole family runs vista. they don't do much with there pc's but they still get more run time with a vista install then they ever got with xp or earlier. if i thought it was worth there interest. i would make em all jump to 7.
and just in case you don't know. you can buy OEM SYSTEM BUILDER windows install at any computer store for the same cost as an upgrade install from any retailer. and it works as both upgrade OR fresh install.
one more thing. i don't know how you format your hard drive. but i always go with the partition delete method. and use the quick format method. you'll shave 1 hour or more off your install as compared to doing that slow format method.
xp has two speeds. quick and full format. the quick method isn't very thorough. the full is. but it's also time consuming. deleting the partion has the same effect as a full format. but it's quick. it knocks out the hard drive completely provided you only have one partition. and only requires a quick format to get it running again.
or if you have more then one partion on any given drive. only knock out the partition that you are using for your windows installation. and recreate by quick formatting.

that sounds a little convoluted but I think I got the gist of it... so you're saying not to waste my money on a reg cleaner program? But maybe to spend a few bucks more and go to vista or 7? I wonder if this computer would have a problem with either version?

that's your decision to get a new windows. my personal preference is newer software. i mean. xp is 9 years old now.
i don't know about the graphics on your machine. that seems to be the the gist of the complaints come from. i would go with 7 just to be safe. besides, i don't think you'll find vista for sale locally. might find it on the internet though.
if you have AT LEAST 2 gigs of memory (RAM) you should be fine running either.
here's the deal though.
OEM SYSTEM BUILDER i was telling you about. only comes with one disc. but you'll save 50 percent. it's been that way with ALL windows ever sold. and are only sold at computer parts stores.
windows 7 NOW comes with 2 discs. IF YOU BUY at a retailer and pay full price. the oem system builder only comes with one disc.
depending on your processor. if it's a single core processor. you need the 32bit disc. if you have a dual core processor. you can go with either 64 bit OR 32 bit.
if you buy at retailer and pay full price. it comes with both discs.
i don't know if you know that or not. but telling you anyways.
becuase of that fact that vista is locked down. preventing any programs people install from touching it's core components. i think people are crazy to even still be running xp.
that's my 2 cents. what you do is your call. whatever you do though. just don't go the upgrade route. upgrades have never been nothing but headaches.
there's a saying. you wouldn't build a new house on a used foundation. so why install a new windows on top of a old windows that's already messed up.
as for registry cleaners.
as i stated. you can install a fresh windows. install registry FIRST. and right off the bat you'll have 10,000 errors. as if registry itself knows better how windows should be.
i tried it once. on a fresh install. nothing but registry loaded. and i was locked up. had to do fresh install all over again. that was 8 years ago though.

Are you sure your cooling fan(s) are working? Usually if any part of a laptop is too hot to the touch then you have a defective component.

Registry cleaners are usually not worth it unless you have a really expensive P.C and don't back up and need to not change very much about the current settings (I dk maybe a multi-user high end Windows only work computer with lots of corporate licensees that is running really slowly but essential for an upcoming deadline?)
I would either format(back up first ) or upgrade if your hardware can handle 7 (it has xp in virtual pc so you can run both Os's for free). I personally would not get Vista or an OEM copy of 7. Let me just state that I am a math/cs grad and own nearly 20 computers (some are half way built). Vista takes up to much capacity and dosen't provide the functionality that 7 does (go with pro or ultimate). It is also ridden with flawed coding and security issued, "downgrading" to XP before 7 was released cost around 200 dollars on an eight hundred dollar laptop and I would have gone with XP sp3 (If I had to choose Windows) regardless.
Feel free to opine, debate, I am open minded and would love the feed back so--
O my OS of choice Freebsd and Slackware

my 2 cents,i have used xp vista and 7. vista uses alot!! of hard drive, better chance of working with an older computer would be 7. win 7 is closest they have ever gotten to getting it right.

You probably have more than one issue to deal with
1) registry errors
2) adware/spyware problems: these will tell you that you all sorts of problems!
This is what I commend, go to Google.com and look for the following programs
Solutions for the Above Problems:
1) CCLEANER, download, install, it will clean up temp files and the registry n its FREE
2) MALWAREBYTES and SUPERANTISPYWARE, download, install, update and run.
Both are FREE and you should run one or both of them every 4 hours of Internet time.
For most people, i recommend once a week, at least.
* I use MalwareBytes most often and then SuperAntiSpyware if i think that problem is
* more severe.
PLEASE NOTE THAT YOU CAN GET SO MANY SPYWARE PROGRAMS ON YOUR HARD DRIVE THAT IT WILL CORRUPT THE OPERATING SYSTEM AND WILL NOT RUN WELL EVEN AFTER USING THESE PROGRAMS. AT THAT POINT, IT IS BEST TO BACK UP YOUR DATA AND REINSTALL FROM SCRATCH.
For Viruses:
AVG 9.0, its a good FREE Anti-Virus Software
Another FREE program you may want to consider using is
DeFraggler, this will defrag the hard drive and, hopefully, speed things up.

I used a registry program and feel it was a waste of my money. Microsoft has a small program which is free that you install and run on your computer and it will tell you if your computer can handle Windows 7. Best buys for it are on eBay. If you know the propper way to bid you can get a good deal. I purchased Windows 7 for $70 and Microsoft wants $200.
