Is it true that in some cases you remarry, you lose your spouse's benefits? I had heard that in some cases, you could lose retirement benefits, health insurance and social security. My husband died almost a year ago and was just wondering. I can get his retirement and health insurance in 3 years.

Yes, in many cases you lose the benefits if you remarry. You have to check into the polocies to make sure.

as I understand it, you would revert back to your own SS...then it would depend...in my case there are mil too, I would loose them, and not get them back, ever...sure gives one real food for thought...

Social security told me that I would not lose widow's benefit, his company told me I would not lose his pension but I would lose health insurance. No marriage for me.

Do you get reg mil retirement or VA? It is my understanding that if you wed after age 60 you keep benefits and SS is the same thing. Have afriend that remarried and still gets SS from her 1st hubby.

Why does it have to be so complicated anyway? My husband died 10 months ago and I have a 3 year old. SS cut off my checks and said I owed them over $6000 so they were holding my checks. I still get one for my son but, why is there such a low amount of income you can make? I cant stay caught up without my check and cant afford to quit work so I can get my check. Damned if I do Damned if I dont. Nothing put back and no insurance on him. After they get their overpayment caught up will I start to get checks again? (This time Ill try to watch how much I make~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Im confused about the whole thing!!!!

I was told by social security that I would receive benefits at 60, but my yearly printout from them still reflexs retirement benefits at 68, so I'm confused.

I think you are correct on spousal benefits at 60 cause that is what I was told. I don't think it will change the printout because that is just going by what you earned. And that's not always correct, because my husband only got one-half of what it said because it was offset by his state pension. He was really mad, and he only got one check since he died five weeks after his benefits started. What made it really bad was they said if he had died in the first month of eligibility he would have gotten nothing but since he was alive for one week in the following month, they re-issued the check in my name. When I called to let them know he had passed away, I asked about the $255 death benefit and was told I didn't qualify because I wasn't 60. I thought that was wrong so I went into the local office and completed the paperwork and did get that check also. It pays to be persistent!

there are times I am not sure many of the people you speak to really know, especially when you different answers to the same question...that alone makes it imposssible to deal with!!!
