I'm just curious if there are any other single parents out there with a special needs child. My daughter has Down Syndrome and although she is the best thing I have ever done, I am wondering about the level of difficulty experienced.
Social Security denied any assistance because I make too much money. Hard to believe with my salary. Just want to hear about other struggles......and thanks!!

Baby75, I am willing to chat with you any time you need. My oldest son was born with Down's. He has since passed away two years ago, but I know what you are going through. So any time you need someone, feel free to email me.

My oldest is autistic and my baby has very mild cerebral palsy. I know hard things can get, but I wouldn't change a thing. They are my reason for living. I'd be happy to talk any time.

Cats43, my oldest was one of twins. We lost his twin at 6 months, 10 years ago to S.I.D.S. That's why I stick those little angels on every thing. They remind me of him.

My oldest was born with a birth defect called plagiocephaly. She required major cranio facial reconstruction surgery at 6 months of age. She has since had other surgeries and just last year was diagnosed with epilepsy. She also has ADD.
My middle doesn't have anything diagnosed but I have my suspicians about him in some things.
The youngest has been diagnosed with both hypotonia and dysgraphia. They suggest he displays tendencies of high functioning Asperger Syndrome as well but has been too young to accurately test for it yet.
While my problems my not mirror yours - you are not alone.

I do not have a special needs child but spent 7 years working with special needs adults and children. SSA is hard because the government is greedy but you CAN get it.
First get a copy of the SSA rules/guidelines and study them. They are different in each state. You want to look at SS disabilties areas AND the supplemental income areas. It will depend on you, your income, the father, father's income, needs, guardianship issues, and other things. You may still be denied after all the hard work. Don't be discouraged (it is VERY popular to be denied)
After being denied two or more times, I would go to a lawyer in the area. There are probono lawyers in ALL counties....also I know of a great legal service company (low monthly payments).
Let me know if you have any more questions...I don't have all the answers, but I will help in any way I can....it's a start.
