Well, there is opportunity. Sometimes we see people we think we might like, but how does one approach someone?
As for internet sites, people are from all over the place, and it may not be practical to go to meet someone. It can be expensive, and with no gain. Then someone has to be prepared to move, which means a lot of other considerations.

I understand Chef's frustrations. On too many dating sites I see the same whiney profiles from women- "looking for my soulmate" "tired of the games/not a game player" "I'm good hearted"...I can go on and on. Yet when great guys like Chef and me take the time and consideration to write to one of you, with few exceptions we normally either get no response or a "not my type." I guess in the online dating community a man doesn't stand a chance unless he's built like either a GQ/Esquire model or like Donald Trump's wallet. And then ladies, how many of those types- your favorite "type," end up mistreating or abusing you?

As Will Smith said in Hitch, women just can't get out of their own way to let a great man into their lives.

PS- maybe some of us guys, especially those divorced, non-custodial fathers who often have to work 2 jobs to pay child support and their own expenses, don't have the time or energy to make it into the gym 3-4 times a week, yet we go forward and do the right things for our kids and don't hit the highway to deadbeat our way out of our obligations. Maybe, ladies, such traits as INTEGRITY, RESPECT and HONOR should count a little more than outer packaging???

I'm with ya Chef!

lisouthernstar: my profile clearly says "looks not important but good character is".
And the same goes for good women. Looks count, no doubt. And part of that though is just how we are made - as my mother (rip) used to say: "If we all had the same taste, we'd all be running after the same man."
My sister and I have such opposite taste that it is a joke between us - guaranteed if she finds a man attractive, I don't, and viceversa.

Forestrose, you raise a good point. I've seen plenty of platinum princesses who have the heart of a frog underneath that cute exterior. Looks are transient. We all want what we want, but as many people have learned after ending up in shallow and abusive relationships, having is not the same as wanting. Quick!! What episode from the original Star Trek series is that quote from?

Because (According to prevailing social theories):

Attraction takes place on 2 levels:
1. Basic biology (pheremones, or 'chemistry')
2. Familiarity

Skip the biology, I figure everyone gets that...

As we grow up, we are exposed to what normal will be for us. Whether we like our experience or not, it creates a comfort zone within our psyche. Later, as we pick through various candidates, we consciously spin off the ones that we recognize as 'not good'. BUT, those who evoke that sense of familiarity (because they have traits we are very familiar with) often get mistaken for 'liking' or 'feeling good with'.

The real b*tch here is that even negative traits (like alcoholism, or abusiveness) can evoke these comfort feelings if that's what you grew up with...unfortunately, the chemistry often blinds us to seeing what our friends or others can sometimes easily see! Not to mention that people do hide their worst traits deliberately...and Voila.

Don't forget that we sometimes sabotage good relationships as well for much the same reason...once screwed over, always screwed over. We often begin protecting ourselves from the inevitable break-up before it happens and communicate unknowingly to our partner that we are expecting to go!...and even good people have a limit...
