Nobs got me thinking. He mentioned the Dutch Pantry restaurants, I used to love those. They had good food and the candy wow, I remember that, got those different flavored candy sticks 5 for 10 cents. The only store like that now is Cracker Barrel. They have the old fashion candy, but it cost much more.

what do you remember that is not here or even cost a whole heck of a lot more.

Example: Funny Face drink. Lawsons Big O orange juice. Towels in soap powder.

When "self service" gas stations didn't exist. . . . your fuel was pumped by someone that ACTUALLY spoke the English language. And there was no bullet proof glass in front of the cashier. The attendant would not only pump your gas, but would check the oil, washer fluid, and politely ask if you needed anything else.

Today, we have to use a credit card or go inside and stand in line behind idiots playing the lottery, or offering to "pay for your stuff" on their govt. card, ....without so much as a "thank you".

That's the least of the problems.....Once you translate the language being "uttered" to you, you get to rush home after work and hope your bank account hasn't been drained by some technology you fail to understand.

By the way...how is it that the price of gas rose extremely high on the mere "threat" of a hurricane in the gulf? Yet after BP dumped over 100 million gallons into the same waters, we've yet to pay the price at the pump?

Just wondering..

Just saw Coke and Orange Fanta at the WalMart this weekend in the glass bottles, made with real sugar, not corn syrup, it was a $1 a bottle. I did get a couple.

I do remember wanting extra money going around asking or collecting pop bottles for neighbors. Once a neighbor a few blocks over left their garage door up (this was the 70s when you could safely) they were gone a few hours, my brother and his friends got their wagons and took all the pop bottles out of it. Which looked to me being little about 100 bottles. Since he was watching me, I needed a bribe to not tell. They split up the money, they only got about 3 or 4 dollars, but I got some change and candy. Back then a quarter could buy a bag of penny candy.

Hate to say after that the neighbor kept their garage door down when they were gone.

Ah, yes Phina, I remember Zebra Fruit Striped gum. It is at our local Family Dollar, but in sugarless.
I remember Teaberry gum. It's also still available, if you know where to find it. Usually IGA stores. At least I found Black Jack and Clove gum there. Same makers that make Teaberry gum.

I remember getting milk in the half gallon glass bottle. Me and my siblings would fight over who got the first pour out of the bottle. It was the thrill of the "glub, glub" sound that first pour made!!

I grew up on a big farm. There was ALWAYS work to be done. One time I decided to wear a bikini when driving the tractor to bale hay, I was about 10 or 12, my brother was on the wagon to stack the bales. He started raising all kinds of cain about "you can't bale hay in a bikini!!!" So, I dumped the clutch, dang near threw him off the wagon! and we baled hay without any more comments from the peanut gallery.

One can find the old fashioned candy and gum at the Cracker Barrel stores, in the restaurants. My family has a farm near Thornville. I had pigs and a horse that were mine I got 4H prizes for them when I showed. Also loved girl scouts when we did real camping and survival projects like the guys in boy scouts. I wonder do the scouts still rough it or just go shopping now days.

When we made popcorn in the evening we had to make enough to fill up a paper grocery bag because there was 6 of us kids plus mom and dad.

Man the groceries my dad had to buy, a whole car load full with 5 gallons of milk a week. God love him, we never did without, ever..

My sister and I used to go help our aunt on the farm. We used to climb the fence and try to ride the mule that wouldn't budge. We had to be careful cause off in the far distance, out in the pasture, was a horse that ruled the roost and didn't like us in his territory. If the horse seen us it would come charging through the field and we would have to hurry and climb back over the fence, scared us to death...good memories indeed

After that everytime my sister was eating the meat I would say MOOO MOOO and I made her cry. I got yelled at for doing that. Now that was funny.
