I'm planning a 2 week trip for late April / early May to visit my son in Alamosa and want to take my rat terrier, Zoe, with me. He will be working during the day and I would like to be able to explore some ghost towns, historical places, etc. Anyone have any recommendations?

For me it would be FLY the friendly skies.... I can't sit still for long peroids of time. But then again... if you drove it, think of all the country side you would see both coming and going. It just depends upon your agenda.

There are so many things to put into the equation but the bottom line is what you want to get out of it. I myself like driving places and being able to "stop and smell the roses" along the way at my pleasure. But right now with gas prices it is usually much cheaper to fly and then do like you said - rent a car and explore while you are there. There are interesting places to see everywhere.
I hope you have a great time and enjoy your time with your son.

where in florida...I have driven home to Boise Idaho from Tampa twice and taken different routes both times and enjoyed the trip alot...unless you want to phyically kill yourself...you can get anywhere in colorado in 4 days...and if the weathers good three...unless your going somewhere close to denver I'd drive...even with gas and motels the cost will be very similar have a great trip...Bob...p.s. the areas north and west of denver have many old mining towns...

probably cheaper to fly than drive with gasoline prices so high.

Be sure to do the loop from Creede up through Lake City to Rt 50, through Monarch Pass, back down Rt 285 to Alamosa.
There are some great ghost towns- Tin Cup, St Elmo, and at Lake City you can learn about Colorado's cannibal - Alfred Packer.
If he has a 4wd, there is some nice driving through Marshal Pass - just South of Monarch.
A side trip from Gunnison (Rt 50) up to Taylor Lake and Cottonmouth Pass is really nice too. Just to the North of Buena Vista you can go through Indepence Pass to Aspen - one of my favorites. That one geenerally opens on Memorial day - but check before you go to be sure. If you get to Leadville you went too far....
To the South towards Taos there is a cool historic railroad Cumbres & Toltec. Taos is wonderful too.
To the East is Leveta Pass and on the other side at Levta you can take the loop around through Cuchurra and on into Trinidad.
Big Horn Sheep Canyon goes from Salida to Canon City. It is along RT 50 also.
Lots of cool stuff to see & do!
