The answer is finally out. Sony's Blu-ray wins out over Microsoft. Toshiba who was the main manufacturer of the HD DVD players has already started switching with its current player which plays both HD DVD and Blu-Ray discs.
I for one am happy with this. The Blu-ray is a better technology offering 54 GB per disc so it has plenty of head room for the future. It is also currently the only 1080P source. The HD DVD player only outputs in 1080i.
What does this mean to you? If you were holding out to see who will win the battle, the battle is over. You can purchase a blu-ray player without worrying about the HD DVD format winning out. This will also mean falling prices on the players and discs. As more manufacturers are making the blu-ray players, the cost of manufacturing will decrease hence decreasing the sale price. As more movie studios switch over to blu-ray it will become the new standard which will lower the blu-ray movie prices. Not to fret, the blu-ray players will still play your current DVD collection and upconvert them to 1080i via HDMI.

I read that WALMART was the deciding factor...due to $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
they decided to only carry the Blue Ray, and that pretty much put the numbers
on the line.
I have not purchased a Blue Ray yet.

wine, i haven't heard that angle before. from what I have read, it was the movie studios that became the deciding factor. Right after warner bros. went to blu-ray is when toshiba made their announcement. most of our clients have been holding out on purchasing one of the new players because of fearing another Beta vs VHS. Most of the higher end manufacturers were also holding out on the technology to see which way things would go. Now Pioneer Elite has a Blu-ray player as well as Denon.
Edit: I just checked wal-mart online and they carry both blu-ray and HD DVD players.

Walmart has reported that they are closing them out and expects ALL INVENTORY of the discontinued items to be gone by June.
Any who...what else can we talk about in computers that will benefit all of us?
I like our little corner of the WORLD on DH...love to see it thrive.
Thanks,

I just visited my distributor in tampa today. They have their HD players prices slashed to move, under $100.
Another note on Blu-ray. Version 2.0 will be out later this year which will bring alot of interactivity to the discs so you still may want to wait till about Christmas season and by then the prices should be much more affordable.
