I was just wondering if anyone here has ever been to Italy? It's a good possibility that I'll be going there sometime this year (my brother is getting married there) and wanted to hear of some of your experiences.

Iam an american 3rd generation of italian descent. Was drafted into the army in the "60s" Got lucky and was assigned to SETAF in Vicenza italy just 35 miles of venice. after serving a 2 an one half year hitch. i got an overseas discharge and spent another 3 years working ofr the DOD in Verona, italy. Came home finished college but have been back to the mother country several times since. If you go to italy go after sept 30 until mid april fares are cheaper so are other pricestt. also you dont have to put up with summer tourst hordes. Also be prepared to get a lot of your stereotypes and ideas of what you think itsly really is get blown away. my home is in denver colo.

I've been to Italy and loved it. I would love to go back again someday. I visited mostly tourist spots, which is not like me but I had limited time, so, I stuck to the popular tourist spots.

Visited Pisa, Florence, Venice and Rome.

I loved Italy, the people, the food, the wine, the history, the archeological sites, everything!

Spent time in Italy both for work and pleasure, my fathers family is from the northern region of Piedmonte. I suggest sticking to the northern areas and enjoying Umbria and Tuscany as well Maniago if you go off from your brothers wedding. I prefer the old cities of Perugia and Trevi. You get a lot of not just the Italian culture and food but some of the regional influence of the French and Swiss peoples. Each region is of its own in Italy more so than most European countries. The people are phenomenal for the most part, enjoy the wine, especially the Barolo and grab all the true Risotto and regional dishes you can, no better place to take in life!!

The only negative is that the Euro is very, very high.. You don't get much
for the dallor But, get a good guide book. I like the
Knopf giude book or DK ..
1. try to eat were the locals go
2. make sure U see the menu, prices before U sit,
and they usally charge for sitting, water, and make
sure if the tip is already included or not !!!
3. Coke is $$$
4. Bring a money belt to put Ur passport and lrg bills$
5. Beware of the GYPSYs they are every were, I have not had
a problem but, then I tend to walk with a (don't f**k w/ me face when I see them)
6.If I'm not staying w/ familly I search on line(and read the reviews)on the
cheap (but clean) pensiione, albergo(hotels) make a copy of Ur reservation...
7. If the hotel doesn't offer breakfast, ask the front desk were U can eat cheap,
or walk around try to go to a stand up ( bar) I like the foccacia...
Anyway, If you want to ask me any other question, feel free... GO, GO..

There's also a day trip book for Italy. I'll try to find the information for you. I used it all over Germany and Italy. It's small and easy to use.
