was it his decision or the teams--of all QBs in my life time, he's one of 5/10 QBs that i have always respecting playing against my Giants--Brett had his championship and perhaps it could have been two but he'll go down as one of the greatest breaking Marino's records in his final year...Nameth (just that i loved his guts), Unitas and Bradshaw, Elway, Montana and Marino i admired too...and some others too i didn't mention...Remember even seeing "something about Mary", Brett was in that movie too...

Agent: Packers QB Brett Favre will retire after 17 seasons
By CHRIS JENKINS, AP Sports Writer

Green Bay Packers quarterback …

AP - Mar 4, 10:17 am EST
1 of 18 NFL Gallery UNDATED (AP)—Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre has decided to retire from the NFL after 17 seasons.

“He has had one of the greatest careers in the history of the National Football League, and he is able to walk away from the game on his own terms— not many players are able to do that,” Packers general manager Ted Thompson said Tuesday.

Favre’s agent Bus Cook said the 38-year-old quarterback told him of his decision Monday night.

“Nobody pushed Bret Favre out the door, but then nobody encouraged him not to go out that door, either,” Cook said by phone from his Hattiesburg, Miss., office.

FOX Sports first reported Tuesday that the three-time MVP planned to retire.

always loved a strong armed QB, like Elway and Marino had as he hardly ever played hurt--to me he was like Cal Ripkin too on staying on the field to have that fun, he enjoyed
(i may want to see him inducted one day in HOF in person, Canton waits for me too)--those tickets are sold out already for sure....when he played against us in the playoffs i thought he'd kill us with his arm alone as our def backs were game to game...thank goodness our front 4 put the pressure on that

I don't think the younger QB's of today have the style and charisma of the "oldies but goodies" like Marino and Elway (my favorites), Montana, and Farve, so many good ones. Football won't be the same without them! JMO

Until training camp opens and Brett's not there I won't be totally convinced that he's retired. He is certainly one of the greatest QB's in NFL history and when you couple that with the obvious joy he showed playing the game; he's tops in my book.

Anne - I agree with you. I would like to add my favorite, Otto Graham of the Cleveland Browns. Brett Starr and the ice bowl. A classic.

ok it is Bart Starr. It has not been a good day.

As a lifelong Packer Fan.....today is a loss, long to be remembered! But he went out on top, what a string of accomplishments!! Got to be HOF material. Not only for what was accomplished on the field, but off too. Just a big kid, @38.....and a all around good guy!

amazing thing about the NFL--the better teams in 2007/08 face a tougher schedule in 2008/9 and that's what i admire about Brett, he knows he can prepare for a great season one after another because of whom he is and about personally but for the sake of a team he made a great decision because the packers will still have to go on because they have too and now a backup takes over, perhaps he may surprise packer fans too...while the teams rebuilds around the new guy--and the Packers are already a great team, it was that Farve made it a super team, so support the new guy now...one thing for sure, Farve will become media savvy for sure in anything he does...he won't fade into the sunset, that's for sure...isn't it something when the best of the best step down it's front page news for sure...
