I have dial up. I keep getting these automatic windows updates and everytime they start to download, my computer slows to a crawl. (Even slower than usual) After it finally downloads, I keep getting this popup telling me that I have 60 seconds to reboot. With every update, my computer slows down. I also have a bunch of files called "hotfix". How can I stop this?

mbk, if you can't schedule these things to go off, say in the middle of the night, when I let my virus scan run, I would do that. Just set it for some time when you are routinely gone so it won't bug you. As far as the 60 seconds to reboot, no clue (hell no, not a technical talent, just know enough to try to keep myself sane).
As far as dialup goes, only way to really get it to go any faster is to upgrade to DSL. I would forget that "high speed" or whatever they call the half way service, go for the full speed. I did it a few months ago, and can't imagine going back to dial up now.
Not as expensive as you may think, especially when you check around and compare. I bundled the phone, TV and internet, and basically came out with the same bill amount as the others cost separately, but got my speed upgraded basically for free.
Just watch out for all those other fluff things they try to tack on, like games and stuff. Jacks the bill for worthless BS.

Being rural...dial-up is usually the main option. I also set my automatic updates for early in the morning when I am not on.

just an fyi. microsoft does offer a cd, that they wil send to you with monthly updates. honestly, it's a waste because they constantly do updates. so the cd is only good once. and...you have to wait a few days to receive it. if you need to install critical updates, it could be too late. my suggestion. one of two things. either upgrade your isp, or, shcedule your updates either overnight, or during the day when you don't need to b on the computer for nothing else then to do updates. good luck.

Yes, you can shut automatic updates off. Get into the Control Panel, (make sure you are on classic view)select Security Center. In there you can choose what to do with them.
