simple rule in these little threads, "What is your response to the following quotes?"
PLEASE, stop and give some thought before posting.

"If you gaze into the abyss, the abyss will gaze into you also!"

Friedrich Nietszche
Beyond Good and Evil

I have been gazing into the abyss long enough that the abyss has not only gazed into me, but has become a part of me it seems.
I believe that the "Abyss"is a comparison, by Nietzche, liking unto Death in his mind.
There are times that I would almost, and I repeat "ALMOST," welcome Death like an old friend.
Then I remind myself of what Bacon once said, "All rising to great places, is by a winding stair."
And life, like all winding stairs, is full of dark and shadowed places. And those stairs rise up out of wells.
I am always trying to climb those stairs up toward the light. I, like all mortals, will slip and fall from time to time and lose a few steps.
When this happens, we must all stop and regain our confidence, as well as our footing. Then start again, always moving forward!

It was reported that Einstein once said, paraphrasing:

"If one had a telescope powerful enough, when you gaze into it you would see the back of your head."

Einstein also said 'The purpose of life is not to clear up the mystery, but to make the mystery clear'
I agree with you a 100% Striker, when you said that we must always strive toward the light. That regardless of how we may fall that we must pick ourselves back up and continue. I have recently had one hell of a fall myself, but as usual I have found that it was not only necessary but timely.
Sometimes it is the result of a fall that we make our greatest steps forward.

when I read that book, the quote stuck to the front of my brain.

it was shortly after my time in the army and I was trying to deal with the crap going on in my life. this was one way that helped me to deal with those things.

just by finding phrases to pick apart and agree or to dispute, just to keep most of my sanity!

Sanity is over-rated anyhow. I have been the same as you, I like to find certain sayings and pick them apart.
In terms of the abyss I feel that it is closely related to what quantum physics refers to as dark matter. We are all a part of it just as much as it is a part of us. The more we are freed from the bias of our own thoughts the more clearly we may see the life that we find ourselves in, as well as the ability to do something about it.

I take it to mean that we are all susceptible to the abyss, if we spend enough time with anything, some of it rubs off on us. Even to the darkest part of mans soul.

I never said I was totally sane. I just did it to keep MOST of it intact.

I'm just sane enough to stay out of those funny white jackets!

"If you gaze into the abyss, the abyss will gaze into you also!"

I once stood on the edge of the abyss called insanity and then walked straight into it. For me there was a point of no return where everything I had believed in and depended on was gone, I was alone, empty and ready to give up.

My experiences on that journey over the next 5 years would seem odd or delusional at best to most people but since it was an inner journey it really was "all about me" and I wouldn't expect anyone else to understand the symbolic meanings of it. I've had another 10 years since then and I'm still not sure what all of it means.

The thing is, I didn't come back from the abyss, I went through it and came out the other side. Part of it is still in me and part of me is still in it. Maybe that's always been the case but I just hadn't been aware of it before.

Am I "sane" now? Is anybody?

"If you try to fly before you get your feet firmly on the ground you'll have a hard time getting your head back out of your a$$" Sri Billy Bob, 1993. (Pen name I used for a while during my "Journey")

well striker your prose is well said and appreciated by me and it gives me pause to think of the times the abyss has managed to be a part of me and then not ....to climb out of ones own abyss is to remember your strength and courage to do so...., and keep within you the lesson learned while enduring a dark time in your life ....just a thought Vera

My thoughts on the abyss were that it was not an everyday place. Something that is so dark that most of us never even get that close to it.
