I thought I'd start by sharing a story about one of my recent adventures. A few months ago, while I was walking my dog Polly, I found a huge mushroom growing on the base of a tree. I'd seen one on the same tree last year and had wanted to take a picture of it, but some kids destroyed it before I got a chance. This time I didn't waste any time and got pics of it. I'm including one in my picture collection here. I thought that would be the end of my mushroom adventure, but when I got back home and loaded the pictures onto my computer I decided to do some web searches. I discovered the mushroom was a chicken in the woods mushroom and was edible. It tastes and has the consistency of white meat chicken when prepared properly. Knowing it would probably be destroyed soon, I decided to go on a mission to harvest it before that could happen. Armed with my biggest carving knife, I set out into the wild to tame this beast. It was about 1 AM. I hacked it off the base of the tree, pushed it into a big brown shopping bag and headed for home. It weighed in at 10.5 lbs. Then I just had to figure out what to do with a 10.5 lb chicken in the woods mushroom. I did some more web surfing and located some mycological societies in the area. They were interested but too far away. I did get a lot of good information from them. I decided to try vegetarian restaurants in the area. One of the first ones I called was interested- Bloodroot in Bridgeport. I delivered the mushroom to them less than 24 hours after harvesting the big shroom and sold it to them for $50. They used it in their recipes over the next few days. Sometimes life brings some pretty amazing surprises.
