***The Verdict Is In***
by sireena at 2/28/2015 12:05:53 PM

The trial and jury duty ended this past week *YAY*

I learned more about the IRS than I really ever care to know...policy, mandates, codes...blah, blah, blah.

Now that's it over, I can talk about it. The defendant, a man who I would say is "60-ish", decided to represent himself. He didn't even have an adviser of some type to assist him. This was his choice and his right under the constitution.

This man was a veteran, a former Green Beret no less. I have an affinity for vets, that's no secret. The man had my respect on that from the get-go.

What became apparent fairly quickly, was that this man was suffering from "something". I'm not sure if it was a matter of mental incompetency, memory loss, narcissism or if he is just an a-hole. A person does not have to be found mentally competent prior to defending ones self (perhaps a law to ponder?).

Not only was there a massive number of documented evidence against him as well as witnesses (a couple of whom are victims of this man), he was unable to defend himself in any manner. He provided no defense! Rather, he wanted to "school" us by reading from manuals and objecting to laws that have existed far longer than any of us!

We all knew the verdict before we even went into deliberation. But, for the sake of being good citizens, we discussed it, reviewed testimony and reaffirmed what we already knew...guilty.

He shook his head in disbelief as the verdict was read and was handcuffed and taken into custody. I got the feeling that he really believed he was innocent...which again leads me to wonder about his mental capacity.

It's not beyond the realm of possibilities that this man will die behind bars. A decorated veteran...that in and of itself is sad. But "justice" was done. I just can't say that I derived any satisfaction from it.

Back to "real life" now. The clocks spring forward next weekend!

the IRS was never passed by a vote of congress. Just some guy from the Wilson administration said it was so to pay for WW1.

Sounds something like my set dad would do.Defend himself, because he think he knows more then law. But it's a shame that this Vet just didn't seek help. This event that happened probably wouldn't have occurred.
