I am thinking of attending a speed dating event this month and I was wondering if anyone has experience with this type of thing. Has anyone tried speed dating? Did you have a good or bad experience?

I was set up on a blind date and I wanted to get out of it so I did the motions just really fast only took an hour and I had the rest of the evening to do nothing

Yes, it was fun but rather stilted. I did not meet anyone, but my friend came with me, and she did!
I am rather shy, works best for extroverts. Have fun! And for pete's sake, go casual, do not
"dress to impress", far too many women dripping mascara and weird outfits!

Never did it, but hear good and bad things. Just be yourself...guess you have 10 minutes to form an opinion! What the hey - it might be fun!

As it was explained to me, you meet 10 people in one evening. You speak with each person for 8 minutes, then move on to the next, until you have met all 10. During this time you mark on a card if you liked them or not, if both people like each other they will be given each others phone numbers at the end.

From what I understand, there are specific rules as far as what you can and can NOT say to the other person. I've never been, but I hear you are not allowed to tell that person during those 8 minutes if you like them or not, for fear it gives the others an unfair disadvantage(!?!?!)
Probably not somerthing I would do. It takes me too long to break the ice, and the whole things just seems too much like an assembly line of potentials.

Yes, and it was a blast! We had 6 minutes at each table to share what information before having to switch seats and get a new partner...We had dinner and drinks during the entire date..12 men and 12 women..when you arrive, you are given information cards to fill out with your name, address, phone number and what ever else you choose to share with a stranger..of course the address and phone number is optional..when or if you meet someone you think you want to know better, you exchange cards before moving onto the next person..afterwards everyone stayed for drinks and mingled more with each other..there were alot of younger (than me) people so I didn't find anyone that I wanted to date. It was alot of fun, and I will do it again..

We had two groups the night I went. My group was the "fitness" group, for the active people my age.
We met in a bar, had a drink and a chance to mingle. There were some snacks, but not too appealing
to my fussy taste. Then the women sat at tables and the men circulated. We did have little cards
so that we could make some notes. Had I met someone great, I assure you I would have said, "Let's
split!" but slugged it out to the end. Two of men had marked me for a "friend". I had also marked them
as a friend, so the group gave out phone numbers. It was amusing, and I do know someone who
met his partner on speed dating. In fact, she gave him her phone number when she watched
him talking at the bar before the evening officially began (he and I went to high school together, he
is a big laughing extrovert). Go ahead, have fun.
