scales Mountain Home AFB, ID age: 24	So my good friend and weightlifting partner are walking through a crowded mall yesterday afternoon and started talking. Neither of us think we are bad looking guys and occasionally we get the feeling that we are "being checked out." So herein lies our problem...I have no idea how to break the ice or initiate conversation. I think to myself hmmm she is all alone why not go talk to her, and its like being pulled off the stage with a cane after a bad performance. I am not sure what the deal is but if anyone has any advice on what to do in the situation, i would appreciate it. dustin Roseville, CA age: 30	Yeah I know what you mean. There are some who just have a lot of game and can go up to any chick and start a conversation. They are to be admired. For us mere mortals it is not quite as easy. If you are wanting to break the ice with a total stranger, you have to have a good line. Not a pickup line, just something that is funny and related to the situation. What is she doing? What is she looking at? If you have an interesting comment to make then go for it. I prefer something funny because women like funny guys. If you get a favorable reaction to whatever you say then keep it going. If you two click at all then the conversation shouldn't be too hard to keep flowing. If there is no chemistry then it might get awkward, at which point you bolt. It just takes practice. If you can muster the courage to go up to total strangers then you are 75% of the way there. It's just a numbers game. Talk to 10 chicks you will probably click with at least 1 of them. Just gotta get yourself to do it, which is much easier said than done

Most of the time it can be pretty awkward cause most guys can never think of anything intelligent to say, so I think that's key, don't just be funny, but try not to sound like an idiot, too. Usually you'll know if she's interested right away, if she gives you short answers and trys to get away from you, then give up, but if she seems friendly and is actually kinda talking to you then maybe you have a chance...thats a big maybe because a lot of girls just tend to be friendly whether or not they are into you. Yes I know, very tricky, too bad we aren't as obvious as guys. I say just stick with your instinct, and prepare to be shot down cause well, thats just how dating goes.

LOL The absolute worst pick up line I ever had used on me was: "Hey baby, who's the meat man?" by a guy who came up to me in a bar while I was celebrating my birthday with some friends...it was so stupid and random that we all could not help but laugh our asses off....well, the guy wasn't trying to be funny so he did not take it well. I say that I appreciate someone who simply approaches with a "Hi, my name is _____." Yeah, basic...but effective and I don't get that oily feeling that I do when a feel that a guy is on the make. Everyone is different, but a respectful approach would work for most, even younger females. Kat

Just make a comment toward her, if she is interested she will talk back to you. I think that guy has an interesting outfit, don't you? Is this weather every going to let up? I like those ear rings, are they expensive? And remember Smile, Smile, Smile....be friendly, outgoing, and helpful. Forget trying to pick her up, because most of the time she will see right through it. Just be friendly to see if she can actually hold a conversation or just looks good...LOL

They spend too much time thinking about what they are going to say that they talk themselves right out of the simple "hello, how are you today?", or miss the opportunity altogether. And definitely look into their eyes, nothing worse then not making eye contact. Pretend to be self assured and in control, step outside of yourself as if on stage playing a role. This will initially help you to gain the much needed confidence. Be yourself, honest and open, but don't wear your heart on your sleeve. The girl also has to deal with it, she maybe shy but if you portray an attitude of self assurance that will help her too. The biggest thing as I mentioned before is to "just say something", asking for the time can even start a conversation. Don't let the opportunity pass you by, who knows that one could have been the 10th one who responds well to you. God luck and practice makes perfect. Alexandra

Seriously - I am thinkin it must help to stop thinkin of YOUrself and just tap into the other person - read the signs that they are sending out. To this day, I have proudly given out $40 dollars... unfortunately, no dates off of that one... yet... but still working on it. But my fav attempt of all time, was my ice breaker by using French, the language of Love. I had gotten this girls phone number, and so I gave her a call and tried to impress her by saying a quick compliment with an exaggerated French accent. Unfortunately she happened to KNOW French, and responded. Now being a quick thinker I then tried German (again, I know like 2 words), and once again she replied. So quickly over to Spanish (I know a whopping 5 words )... figuring if nothing else she would think I was really smart. Once again to my dismay she started speaking Spanish... so with a last ditch effort I went to Latin (thank goodness for high speed internet). I mean, no one speaks Latin... so peice of cake.
