Has anybody else noticed how phone calls are slowly being replaced by texting? It's killing me! You lose the nuance of voice when they are telling you something when it can be only read. I've watched two potential relationships self distruct from this. What's so hard about picking up a phone anymore?

I agree. You can read alot between the lines when you actually hear someone's voice. Text is just that, words, you can never know the intentions behind them.

Amen. It's fine for a quick message. But, when it goes back and forth more than once that is called a conversation.

I have not figured out how to do it, and it seems too tedious and fussy for me, but then again, so is this keyboard!
I do not think it is something that people my age do or would want to do, for the most part!

I totally agree - conversations are much better in person. I turned off that feature on my phone so that I do not have to deal with it anymore.

I have no problem recieving a text message asking me "How am I doing today?" It let me know the person is thinking of me.

I rather text back and forth than talk on the phone, unless there is something specfic to talk about. Then I rather talk on the phone.

I can text and do something else while texting, cook dinner, watch tv, play on my computer, or playstation but when I am on the phone I can't do anything but listen and talk.

texting became so wildly popular because of the people that were complaining about everyone talking on the phone. These days rather than saying everthing you wanted to you can just send a message. For myself i spend alot of time texting cause i don't want other people listening in on my conversations. There is alot to be said for the technology and the leaps have only just begun.

I don't like it as much as talking on the phone but find it an evil necessity. With 12 hour shifts if I don't send / receive texts people would never get to me.

I HATE texting with a passion. It's so goddamn annoying! It takes minutes to write what you can speak in seconds. AND my phone plan doesn't cover it, so 20c to receive and send each one. That adds up quickly when there are dozens of them.

Why would a person prefer to text, when they just call and talk?

texting does suck.

however it is communication by all means.

go back some years when this service wasn't available to us, but when it first begun. was like wow, we're like Captain Kirk, have a cell phone!

before that was, I hate the pager.

before that was; I hate the phone messages.

before that was; I hate the phone calls.

before that was; I hate all these letters in the mail.

before that was; I hate the telegraph messages.

before that was; damn I hate reading stone written messages.

before that was; I wish I had a tool to write stone messages.

before that was; I wish I could write & read messages in the sand before the tide came in.

before that was; I wish I didn't have only fins, I could write messages in the sand....

If you learn the T9 text it can take only seconds to write a whole paragraph, also if you have that one certain person that is a long talker you can fix it by only texting.

Unlimited text is much cheaper than unlimited minutes, and it is very conveniet to text when you cant talk, but it is very easy to miscontrue meaning through a text kind of like it is here when you miss intonation and expression.

I didn't think I would like it, but with the T9, it is very easy. You can send a quick note - sometimes fun banter. With cell phones and being able to catch someone at anytime of day or night and possibly reach someone at the wrong or inconvient time - with texting, they can read it whenever and respond when they are able. Also, it does make it a quick way to end a potential long winded person.

I agree, e-mail blogging, and text messaging are not good for maintaining a relationship. Nothing replaces face-to-face getting to know you time. I learned while in Central America to relish the walks down the street that brought hails from the windows of stilted homes and strangers on the street. Most knew who I was as I was the teacher of their nephew, cousin, aunt, uncle, sister, brother.
I was in a rush to "get things done", they taught me to engage with humanity in a way that has been lost in American culture. .... and we are the worse for it.
Got things done, eventually, but more importantly I created bonds with a people and a culture that could not be formed in any other way.

We've replaced human contact (and I do not mean sexual intercourse, although this has been affected by same technology)with near surgically attached to the ear cell phones, strained thumbs and fingers from texting key pads so small you really need the incredible shrinking man to operate them safely, and the "safety" of e-mailing to avoid the threat of "rejection" or to reserve the right of first rejection in order to avoid direct first person communication to say "I'm sorry but I don't think we fit together as love interests".

On the other hand to be fair, the e-mail at least allows all of us to connect on the same wavelength, regardless of age, gender, orientation, ethnicity, etc. over great distances.
People of all ages and walks of life have common experiences to share and support to give each other. Good suggestions for consideration for dealing with challenges are not reserved to older adults. (Discretion of course is advisable as these transmissions are permanently recorded in servers)

I predict that the next great cataclysm will come when natural or man made problems result in the total disruption of cell phone/computer networks. The mass psychiatric breakdown of American society will be at hand. (and couches won't help because people won't be able to easily schedule appointments.) Remember 'history tends to repeat itself' and 'what goes around comes around' are apt cliches in human context. Until then,

Very true! These days it seems that a large portion of men out there REALLY like this texting era because it is a way to avoid confrontation and awkward conversations. Lame! I myself would rather talk on the phone or face to face because it allows you to express emotion, explain your ideas, dreams, and fears, as well as be involved in human communication the way it was meant to be! Up close and personal. Kudos!
