Downieville and the area around it. The Downie and north fork of the Yuba river come together right in the middle of town. There is a motel that backs up against the edge of the river. A couple miles out of town is "Sierra shangri-la"; they rent cabins along the river. Nothing like sitting on the deck watching and hearing the river go past.

It's hard to pick a favorite since California has so many cool small towns.
Today I will say JUNE LAKE or BRIDGEPORT w/ Twin Lakes next door.

Hemet used to be a small town 40 years ago, great fun.
Still fairly small however not that exciting now but the surrounding areas have a lot of fun things to do.

We used to go there from Long Beach. I guess at one time it was a center for body building, health foods, in 50's
and early 60's, before working out and eating right became mainstream. There were still a few old time "healthfood"
stores there then. I recall a nice park, and the climate was fun because it was different from LB. Very dry, desert
air, but cooler in winter than by the coast. Where do they do Ramona, is that Hemet?

A motorcycle ride up highway 243 to Idyllwild is really hard to beat on a summer
weekend. Mile high coolness and mountain beauty with vista views along the way.
JoAnne's has outdoor BBQ and free live music some Sat and every Sunday. Leaving
you can take highway 74 to either Hemet or Palm Desert. If you split off on highway
371 you can head through Anza toward Temecula - all nice rides depending on the
temperature. I've done Julian and it's quaint but Idyllwild is more fun with much
the same kind of ride. Also, if you are one to partake of beverage, Julian can be
down right inhospitable. The man often parks across the street from the local pub
and that ought to give you a clue. But for apple pie and puppies, I'm not sure that
Idyllwild can top it. IMHO.

Laguna, its usually really quite, tranquil. That is until the tourist come into town, then it feels like a big city.

Julian is real cool, I used to live there back in the early 80's. Laytonville is pretty neat too... and I agree, they've really torn up 101 going through town there...passed through a few weeks ago. Ferndale is sweet as is Occidental, but I'd have to say that my favorite is right in my back yard, Sebastopol. It's near enough San Francisco (55 miles), yet far enough out in the sticks to allow you to breathe and live a quiet life. But shhh, don't tell anybody...
