redneck, If You're hunting close (less than 150 yards), the 30-30 will serve You well.
If You can find a used one in good condition, that's Your best bet.
I brought home a lot of venison with a 30-30. Tip--Take the hood off the front sight.

Decided It was time now for a new gun. I have ben wanting a baby sharps for several years now but never liked the $5000.00 + price tag on most. Well now Charles Daily is selling a baby sharps made in Italy and I had one orded last week and it came yesterday. I orded a 30-30 thinking I may change it to 30-40 craig or more likely re-barrel it to 32-40 winchester. well it's just perfict as a 30-30 I'm thinging now, realy is sweet. Just cleaned the barrel and am about to go try it out!! Not offten that I treat myself to a new gun as I usealy just buy old ones. Though they have ben out several years this is the 1st one I have ever seen & handled, I am not disaponted at all. And my price was $954.00

I prefer bolt actions and semi-autos for hunting but as long as they go bang they are all darn interesting.I do have a fetish for full-stocked(mannlicher) type rifles and kinda like single shots regardless of action type

I have a Ruger M77 in 30-06 that was my main hunting rifle for years. I few years back I bought the same gun in 300 Win for elk hunting. I killed a bunch of elk with the 06 but the 300 reaches out with a little more authority. So the 06 is now just a deer rifle. I have an old beat up Remington 870 that I use for duck hunting. It is an ugly old thing but it takes a lickin and keeps on tickin. I have a number of other guns but those are the ones that actually get used.

I don't hunt anymore, but still have my old Winchester 94 sitting by the door in case any more cougar decide they want a horseburger dinner. For home protection and while I am out riding, I have a Tokarev 9mm, and for concealed carry an AMT .380. I use Hydrashocks in both pistols.

depends on what i feel like that day. usually hunt with handguns. for large game its my .50 alaskan. squirrel, rabbit, coon i use a single six, the fifty is better for bear than a rifle because i can handle my hounds easier. for deer i just like to use a revolver. if i feel like shooting much more than a hundred yards ill use the .338 win mag. bolt, if i feel like really reaching out there my state arms .50 bmg. but by far my magnum research bfr rechambered in .50 alaskan is my favorite. oh my carry weapon is a kimber custom carry 1911.

I have a small collection. Only 22 guns ranging from muzzleloaders, WWI military rifles, to one semi-auot rifle. My Favorite and one that I will never part with is my Ruger SuperBlackhawk. I was about 15 and was over at a nieghbors target shooting with my dads 22 rifle when the neighbor asked if I wanted to shoot a 44 Mag. I agreed. 30 years later, I own that very gun, the first hand gun I ever shot.

My favorite has to be my Ithaca Model 37 in 12 Gauge. I bought the gun originally from Gander Mountain in Eau Claire WI. Send it back to the factory and had it totally overhauled, re-blued and new wood put on. Then I put a 28" Hastings Vented Rib barrel on it, and it's a work of beauty. It was made in 1956 and after I got done having it restored, it looks better today than the day it was made; Great gun. I hold to the belief that if you need more than six shots, you're dead anyway. For that reason, I carry a S&W 686 4" 357 with Hydroshocks. It'll take out an 8" diameter tree, I've done it up in Alaska.

when it comes to hunting Deer, I'm kinda stuck...Where I live, you cant use rifles...only shotguns, pistols, and muzzle loaders. So I go with a 12 guage, pump (of course) or a muzzle loader.
As far as just fun to shoot, I like bolt action rifles...45/70, 30-30, or the old 91/30 (WWII Russian rifle) with the 7.62x54R round...very fun gun!

I enjoy varmint hunting myself. Favorite small varmint guns are Marlin Model 60, Semi-Auto 22 and Ruger 10/22 Semi-Auto. These new break barrel Pellet Rifles are also excellent varmint rifles. Some are as fast if not fast than some 22 cartridges.

Louie, I tried the rossi triple play. .22 and 20 guage I would class as poor to average. The .243 is a 50 yard gun at best, no matter what you feed it. I think this stems from the design of the gun, the barrel is not free floating at all. Three holes in a paper plate out of 5 shots at 100 yards using a rest isnt good. I sold it

I used my over and under Remington 310 for the first time on Thursday. first round of trap 18 / 25. Second, round 13/25 with my 11-87, and the third round 16/25 with the over under. First, round of trap in over 10 years. I was not following thru very well, and I bruised my arm because I did not shoulder the gun properly, but I can't wait to shoot again.

My tastes in firearms are pretty wide. I like long range precision shooting, shooting competitions (such as 3 gun, ISPC, and IDPA, skeet/trap, postal matches, appleseed shoots, and pretty much anything and everything that deals with sending lead down range.
I do have a soft sport though for steel and wood guns. I get the most enjoyment out of shooting my milsurps and my old 22's
I sure do love building custom 1911's though....that's probably my all time favorite gun right there

I have a Winchester model 64 30-30 that my dad bought new in '39. He shot a ton of deer with that rifle. It was his only deer rifle until my brother and I started hunting. We both shot our first deer with that 30-30. I plan to shoot a deer with it this year just for old time sake. I also have an old 30-40 Krag that belonged to a great uncle. He was a trapper in Alaska in the 1910's to 1930's. That gun has killed a lot of bears and moose. And when he came back south in the 40's and 50's the gun killed a bunch of elk and deer. So next year I plan to dust it off and use it to get a deer. To read all the sportsman magazines you wouldn't think that those old guns could kill a deer but they sure worked in the past so I figure they will still work.

I just picked up a Mossberg 500 in 410. I've got a love affair with pump action shotguns and the price was right. I had a Remington 870 Express in 410, but I got rid of it. It was a nice gun, but the finish wasn't the greatest. I'm pretty impressed with the finish on this Mossberg. Good Squirrel and rabbit gun
