I read it. Yes I have heard of these schemes and known of a few people who have fallen victim to it. It's harder when there are feelings involved - whether we know there are true feelings or not. Always sad when someone plays with your emotions. I think that's one of the things that makes online "dating" difficult. How does anyone know who they are REALLY talking to?

well it is not only nigeria it is also the uk and africa throughout also china and india and russia they are on different date sites...be ware of the ones who send you checks claiming to be in those countries...they are actually here in the states and in michigan...they send you a check for you to cash and send them the money...the checks are bogus and the fbi as well as the postal services agents are on to them and are getting close to making the arrests....i know because i received a check to turn over to the proper authorities....

There are major scams from ghana, they do not have separate website,
they work sights, like singlesnet, and other free sites, older men
and older women, are targets, I guess they figure we are more vulnerable.
In Russia it is a major industry, they rush to get you on their yahoo email
address, but those addresses can be traced. There are also scammers in this
country, I knew a women, who was super vulnerable, and lost her savings.
If it has to do with money, help with visa, etc red flag, and guys if the
girl is 30 and you are 55, and she says age doesn't matter, well you figure
it out

when i received that check it had 2 types of ink used the postal inspectors agent had came by to pick it up personally and along with all the correspondence on the computer i had with these individuals i had recorded every single time i spoke to them and made copies to fax to the proper authorities...they have a lot to go by now and are working diligently to stop this fraud from happening to the american people...they will appreciate it if more people like myself asked those individuals for their id which i was able to obtain along with their address where they reside now ( which i also got by asking where i could send a dozen roses to) in the efforts of all we can work together and rid of some of these scammers....also there is another scam involving heritance in the uk you should also be aware of...an attorney so called will contact you and ask for your personal info claiming you can make millions of dollars and then sends you info on the deceased claiming that they have no existing reletives and you can act as one...be careful all...it is soon coming to a halt....

I experienced all of this this week thank goodness the girl I was talking to didnt realize that I was making a list and checing it twice. Still I gained great affectio and sympathy for her, but i took it to the next level. I emailed the FBI all of our correspondence. and blocked her email. I have been approached by many. They are now getting a little smarter so be careful. Not using a picture of someone fabulous but good looking. Claim to be from here and working in nigeria temporarily. The men that have contacted me have names that are like 2 first names. Bill Williams, John Johnson, Bill Edwards. They start out staying how Beautiful you are and when they tell you their name they say I am Bill by name. Usually have been married and wife has died and they raised children alone. Usually 1 child and her name more often than not is Lisa.

I can give you user names. He is smooth ladies. I found myself falling for his charms. When I wouldn't send money I just didn't care about him and this and that. This went on for 2mths.

I have been hit 3 times by these scammers. The last one almost had me believing him the picture was of a regular looking man my age. But I used to work in the banking industy and red flags started to pop up. His grammer was really bad for a bussiness man that was a building contracter from OK working in Nigera. He too had one child but this on was a boy named Tommy. He used the name of Steve Philip. Any way he said his workers could not cash their pay because they were money orders and wanted me to cash them and then keep a couple of hundred of the $4000 and wire the money back by using money gram. I decided to play this out and let him send them. He used UPS next day. I took them to the bank that did money grams and they said they were from Wal Mart, the bank called the main office from money gram and sure enough they were fake. If I had cashed them at my bank I would have been liable for the money. I am glad I checked them out I can't afford that. Later that day an Nigeran called me wanted to know if I got the checks cashed and I told him I knew it was a big fraud and to leave me alone. Later he im'd me playing the same old song and said he did not understand why they could be fraud. Wanted me to sell my car, get a loan and do anything to send him money. He and Tommy had no food. I told him again I knew it was a big fat fraud and to leave me alone. He said he would kill his self even. I just said go for it. For several days before I deleted him I would see him online before I finally deleted him. I would send an im and say I see your still alive. Who are you scamming now.

Apparently Nigeria has some of the best loocking 28 year old women in the world ( at least according to the photos displayed). I could never figure out whether I was actually talking to a 28 year old bombshell who just couldn't spell, or some old guy in a rocking chair reading from a script. Because they apparently all use the same script. The words hardly ever change. Usually when a 28 0r 30 year old wants true love for the rest of her life from a 57 year old man she has never seen, the flags go up.It's sort of fun if you don't take them seriously.
Plenty of other scams too.

This happened to me also. 2 times and now I have one who says he is from New York and away in Africa doing work. He calls himself KelvinSmith. I have never seen a picture of him. I want to get him in trouble but I don't know what to do. I know that he is going to try and scam me since I have been through this twice before. The man before this asked for my credit card number and at that point I told him that my brother was a policeman, no sooner I said it he was gone. Be very careful, remember that old saying "If it sounds to good to be true, than it is not the truth" go with it and listen to your inner self.

I have heard that some are starting in the Republic of china
in towns near hong kong, my nephew is corresponding with a
women from China, told him to be careful, even if china is
not normally a location for scams, says he has been writing
back and forth for over three months, some scammers will work
you for 6 to 8 months. When I was young, I got fixed up with
a date in germany, when I went to meet them, I got jumped and
beaten obviously they took what money I had, talk about trust
issues...

Hey trucker I have a factual comment on this one for sure you bet.
But first I need to say and ask? Touche Knight, lol, can I use that next time I have a guy from Ghana who says he is in love with me right away? I love it. lol,
I had a guy contact me through American Singles but I am not on there anymore if any are interested.
He said he was from Milan, Italy and was building a road in Ghana and we talked for awhile and then was madly in love with me and wanted to come to Indiana to be with me and I was at first ok with him but friends did tell me about the scams going on in Africa and elsewhere and I did look it up in Hoaxbusters and found that was true.
Well we communicated for awhile and whenever I asked him a question about himself he was really standoffish about answering, saying is this an inqusition? Why do you need to know so much about me. Well this was my indication he was not legit. So he started to answer my questions and anything I wanted to hear that was really what a woman wanted to hear.
Of course I do put on my profile about being a widow so people are more likely to try to sway me but I knew about people like him and caught wind of his bull$@!%!
So I followed along with him he wanted to talk to me over the phone and I know no one can find me where I live I am in the country and even my family has trouble finding the place.
I am also unlisted with my home number and my cell is the best because you cant find a person who does not wish to be found with a cell.
Anyway, he kept up the charad and thought he was so successful. Pretty soon he was not talking on the phone anymore because the last he was saying he was feeling really sick and couldnt talk then in a few days I called him and he answered.
He was in the hospital took me a few days to find out he says he had malaria and well behold he had a question. Which didnt take a 2 year old long to figure out what it was.
He said I dont want to ask on the phone I am too embarrassed I think I will contact you on your IM and he did he said the money was depleted from being in the hospital and he wanted me to send him some money because he had just got paid but the money went to Milan and he couldnt get into his account in Ghana they closed it off all of a sudden, then there was this guy who came into his room all of a sudden and typed some stuff on his IM and it was a alternate name which I had found on my text messages as well, lol, he said this guy came in and was drunk and fell on his keyboard and the same name was typed in so what am I to think here? Hummmm! He said all he wanted to do now was get out of there and be with me and he had no money to feed himself and also didnt want to drink the water.
He said I am trying to get to you and be there in the worst way. OH YEAH. He said I ran out of chits to be able to call you that is why I havnt called you since I was in the hospital. All the while the language was really off.
We all know construction workers make good money but he was a supervisor "you cant tell me he was not making good money as a supervisor, oh and your account was closed all of a sudden?"
I told him well I cant send money I know you think I am well off because I have lost my husband but he left me with nothing and I am struggling myself, so all I can give is my love to you and my support.
Oh boy did he get ever mad at me.
Well this is not all the complete story but a short version of it.
I sent a email to him telling him to forget my phone number, email and anything he ever thought about me and I told him he was the worst con artist I have ever met up with.
That really made him mad. Then he tried to confuse me and that really didnt work in my book and then the guilt trips and let me tell you I am not easily swayed by guilt trips my mother was the one and only guilt trip person in my life and I learned early on how to deal with guilt trips (dont go with the flow here) doesnt work with me!
I loath guilt trips from anyone who trys it.
So I never heard from him again. SLAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
His name is Clause Bianchi or so he claims and he has a sister also is what he claims cant remember her name but he claims to be from Milan, Italy just so you all know.
Never did go after him but oh well I did learn from the experience that what my passed husband did teach me the ways of the street life and I will never forget that.
Glad he taught me well. But I am also a learner of talking to different people about things after all I was a waitress at one time and when you talk to people you learn alot.
So the moral of this story is talk to alot of different people and you will come out ok and you will learn from your experiences as well. I did, have and will always be always learning.

Yes, there are many scams like this. Many women fall prey to men who profess to be engineers but overseas. Sometimes they ask you to cash a check or accept a delivery of goods.
Profiles of these guys (and girls I am sure) contain poor English, bad spelling, u for you, and profess a love of God and how honest they are. They want to get you on im as quickly as possible. They also usually have children or a sick relative. There is a modeling site from Hawaii that many get photos from. I joined romancescams.com and got a lot of info including photos that scammer's post as photos. I see these profiles with the copied photos all the time and usually report them.
My son has talked to one chick I warned him against. She was in a foreign country and too good to be true.
It is true that there is way too much of this on the web. Use your head always and if money is involved you can be sure it's a scammer. Don't ever give out personal information or even an address to anyone.

Yes, that is true about the address even though I had already figured him as a scam scum I played it out and let him send the phoney money orders. My sons got so mad at me. I knew he was in Nigera I wasn't scared of them. Maybe I should have but at the time I was just plain mad.

You know how red tape is and all you have to go through with the FBI? I did go on there site and checked it out and they said you may not be able to get this guy because of the name they bounce from name to name and email addresses appear and dissapear here and there and are giving out so much info, but they cant catch them the way they are doing it, now. Email addresses change from time to time and his did. Like he said also which I did not bring out in the last thread he said this guy who got on his email was trying to mess with his computer and that made him give out stuff he was not trying to send. lol. I knew better but he was trying to mess with me. lol.
Why do I want to go through the red tape to get to a never ending cause because it just leads to the same, you would have to be on there doing the samething year after year, filling out the same paperwork year after year and let them know things every year the same thing over again, til it to them made no sence to them, while knowing you know what happened but to them what is a story over and over again making it their story not yours?
Then they cant give you a real answer for at least 15 to 20 years later. Because they dont even believe it themselves. lol No I am not crazy but I have lived it and know the ultimate reality. They dont care if it is so small of a story. If it doesnt make the papers they dont care it just does not make the shelves. Bummer, right? It happens!
No, I dont think so, did the same with my husband's death, the claim I put in from the Vioxx thing and that is still going on, it will lead to more heartache year after year and I am just not into letting myself feel that for the rest of my life. OK?
Filling out paperwork for the rest of my life year after year is not my thing, but, just letting people know about the situation is enough for me.
If you are affected by this situation, you just need to let it go but you still need to let people know about it online, the red tape will just make you go down in your positivity more and more.
HUMMM! Believe me I know how it feels to have someone violate your love and emotions and it is no picnic. But letting the higher ups know? Well let me put it this way, it just depends on how your emotional level is really ready to get put through the ringer.
Someone who cares about the human aspect and is willing to go the extra mile to help the other person. Yeah me.

I understand PKK, I never let him ask for how much, my friends asked me how much did he want I said, I didnt let it get that far I am a person who will always read between the lines and I am careful, because I am who I am a widow and believe me there are more people who will try to get anything out of you and I am a person who has worked so hard for what I have now. I am not willing to give it without a fight.
I have come a long way baby and know what I want for myself and have built up me.
After my husband died, I thought that's it I am shot gone forever in myself esteem.
But I am a survivor and always will be. I fought long and hard for myself esteem and I set goals for me when it happened.
And I have gone far beyond what everyone thought I could not go.
I found myself finally and got better and more perceptive with anyone who I come in contact with.
I look at the eyes mostly and see into them. This guy I couldnt see it. The picture he sent was so weird and wrong for a guy who was a supervisor, he looked like a GQ model and I just knew he was wrong with his intentions. The eye contact was just not right for me.
Although he was pretty spectacular as far as apperances go. But there was always something wrong with him. Something I couldnt put my finger on.

Yes puzzle queen I am a widow too and I know the routine. If they look like a model from GQ you'd better beware.
If I could catch a few of them and would draw and quarter them. They are the scum of the Earth preying on women that are alone, perhaps widowed and looking for love. You can't put a price on the feelings involved.

Funny that Travis started a thread on those Nigerian scams.
I had a guy come to my office this last week with a load of documentation that he had been scammed. He was sent a cashier's check for almost $5,000 and was told to deposit it into his account and within 24 hours, withdraw over $4,000 cash. He was then instructed to go to another location and purchase two separate money orders in the amount of $2,000 each. He followed instructions and mailed them to two separate locations. He was told to keep $1,000 for his trouble. The third day after he deposited that $5,000 check, it bounced. The man was out over $4,000 of his own money.
He brought all of this to me and wanted to file a complaint. The poor sucker had four children with him and told me he had to take a loan out from his bank to cover all of the overdrawn checks from his account, so he has lost a total of almost $10,000.
I asked him if he filled out an application to work for "those people" or if he contacted them by email or phone to make an agreement to do what he did. He stated to me that he just received the check in the mail out of the blue with a letter telling him what to do. The letter looks professional and the language contains a lot of legal ease that might impress the "average Joe" who would not know the difference. I just couldn't believe someone would be that stupid. . . and I still can't. People fall for these Nigerian scams all of the time, whether it is "for love" or to "earn" money without really doing anything.
All I could do was take his complaint and assign an investigator to take it.
The first time anyone gets a clue that you are being scammed, contact your local County or District Attorney. You will probably be referred to the feds, though.
If someone wants something of value from you (even if it is your intangible heart), make sure you spend physical time with them first. That type of scammer cannot be or does not like to be seen.

Yeah on another website I have met a few women from Nigeria or Ghana, even some from England and Russia. As I get them on chat to start to get to find out what they are about money and someone dying always comes into the picture. Kind of a sick thing if you ask me but eh, that is life I suppose. All of them claim that they are trapped and need to get back to where you happen to be from. Quite sad that people fall for this.
