I was reading a woman's profile, and in it she said that there were an awful lot of men that were self employed on here. I, myself, am self employed. I have been off and on for 20+ years. I pay my own insurance, have my own town and county licenses, file 1099's and pay my taxes every season.

I'm curious as to what ladies think of us self employed guys. Some of us make a pretty good living, while others struggle. Some guys put self employed because they're crack dealers I'm sure, but there are honest contractors and sub contractors out there.

I prefer it. I take what jobs I want. Make my own hours for the most part, and if I want to take the day off to take care of a sick GF or just to f**k her all day, I can.

I imagine writers, musicians, among others reap the same benefits. I know it can be tough going as a couple, especially if work is slow. Lord knows me and my ex fought numerous occasions because of it. It is what it is, and I wouldn't change it for the world. No one looking over my shoulder. No boss to nag me. I'm a vet so my helth care is covered, and so is my families, should I ever decide to get married again. NO OBAMACARE in this house!!!! Jus sayin...Thought, complaints, boobies, whatever ya want, discuss...

I don't think about it all that much. My late husband was a consultant, so self-employed. He also worked for others, so it was either/or, at times.

(VA covers vision and dental? I didn't think they did. I also didn't think they covered a vet's family, just the vet. Learn something new all the time.)

My husband and I had a company together......

I will say this......it was rough.

All we talked about was .......work.

When he got home.......work. Dinner ? Work......."relaxing" ? Work....

In the 17 yrs of it ? Not one vacation.....never a break for me. He handled the labor part...God Bless him...Texas heat !

But once he was home ? His day was done.......mine wasn't.

I encouraged his breaks...he was a Trail Rider...and we invested quite a bit of $$ in that. I thought he deserved it . He would leave for a week or a few days at a time...While I handled the business.

We had many a "discussion" about the business....and it was draining.

I would not have an issue with a self employed man........as long as I wasn't involved .

But keeping my mouth shut on certain things would be ...........well, let's just say a true test of my inner strength

I never said anything about vision and dental. Those aren't covered unluess you're retired military or deemed disabled. I was able to obtain glasses last year because my vision was so bad they deemed me an emergency case. Most vets have 90 days after service to get their teeth taken care of, after that, we're on our own.
Yes, a vets family is taken care of if they are married I do believe. It may be active duty only. I'm not sure. My ex wife had her own insurance plus her kids were covered by their fathers' insurance, so I never had to bother asking. It just seems like I heard that they did. All I know is my "health" care is taken care of only with a small deductible for some meds.

I'm with you grneyes... Also self employed.
I make 75% of my income April-Sept.

I like to say being self employed...everyday I wake up unemployed.
I have 4 people that I employ (8-10 during the busy season) and their livlihood depends on me as well. That would be scary to most...but I know what I'm capable of.

Last Friday a new client called me (I didn't have to solicit) and wanted to contract my services after the first of the year. Thats approx another $25-$30k I'll make in January and February; my slow period after Christmas.

I love what I do and I'm good at it. I love the freedom of being able to come and go as I please, and that I'm not one of the 9-5 walking dead drones.

self employment, if done right, and efficiently, and preferably legal, is really the most solid way to financial independence. you also know your business inside and out, because you've been with it all the way. you can train others right, without the pitfalls you had to endure, and you basically multiply yourself.

if someone says self employed, i give them the benefit of the doubt because it takes courage and tenacity which instills wisdom and solidarity later. you can't get that with employment these days.

that stopped in about 1982 when the steel mills shut down and everything was outsourced overseas, as everything steadily is going that way as we speak. even some Harley parts are not American anymore. but that engine is. that's still the heart of us that endured. everywhere else, people that supposedly had pensions are losing everything left and right. yes, it might improve a little, but job security never will again.

I also get true joy when I finish a stone fireplace, or a deck and the smile on the homeowner's face makes it all worth while. I get to do something different with every job. (Although I hope I never see another roof as long as I live, unless it's my own).

normally I do my own thing, but if it's a big job, I will hire a kid or a friends kid to give them some cash and teach them the benefit of a hard days work. I have other contractors that I work with and I sub off them also if I don't have any jobs to do.
When I bid a job, I require half payment up front as that covers all my guys' labor and materials to do the job. That way they're never screwed. I've been screwed by contractors so many times, and have had to wait for my money weeks after the job is done. I won't do that to my guys. Plus when the job is done, and I get the final payment, it's MINE!!! ALL MINE!!! MUAHAHAHAHAHA(evil laugh) lol

HB exactly. My buddys wife left him for a dude with a cushy factory job with benefits, a 401 k ect...she chose stability over peace of mind and time to spend with her significant other. it's one of the cons of our business, I will admit that. Women want to be secure. They don't like not knowing when the next job is coming. It's a hard life in the beginning. Lord knows me and my ex wife struggled. My ex was always just happy that I was getting some work. One of the things I loved about her. She supported me. She was a strong woman, a good woman that always had my back. It's just too bad things went sour.

OP, once again, it all comes back to and down to MONEY. I understand that people don't want to admit this and will ignore all the facts, which, quite frankly, means they are lying to themselves. It doesn't make any sense to me but then again, it doesn't have to.

anyway...enough about my heartbreaks. I'm curious how writers survive. I've always thought about writing. I have even started a few things. It takes a lot of solitude and time for thought. I'm sure in between both books, or articles, poems, etc...it must be tough, especially with an editor on your a** for a deadline.

Tater, $19-$26K a year goes farther where you live than where I do but it would be extremely difficult here to get any woman to take you seriously if you are in your 30's only making that much a year. I think the absolute bare minimum that would get your foot in the door with a woman would be $40,000 a year to start with a lot of room for improvement IMO but hopefully $19-$26k works out for you.
