Hard call. Depends on so many factors. How old is your dog? What are the chances of a full recovery and to what state that recovery is? I mean a $2000 op on a 14 yr old that will leave it barely able to function is, I think, cruel and frankly, stupid. We can't keep our pets alive forever and they, like us, get old and develop medical conditions that should if common sense is used, be allowed to take their course. As long as the pet isn't suffering then allow it to grow old and do what comes naturally. A friend recently spent $12,000 on keeping a 14 year old Shepherd free of cancer for 16 months. The dog was niserable most of the time and I KNOW he didn't have $12K to throw away.
He loved his dog but $12K AT FOURTEEN ??!!!
Sorry, not me and I love my dogs like they're kids. I'll add that I feel that way about ME too.

I agree with Dave here, alot of factors come into play - age, chance of recovery, quality of life. I've spent $1800 on my son's young Jack Rotten when he ate a pound of Easter M&M's, another $1200 when he ate a sock and his intestines shut down. He's only 4, we got him because as a pup he had unexplained seizures and the breeder didn't want to sell him, just make sure he had a good home. Costs me about a $150 a quarter on his daily meds, but he's seizure free and what a love! I adore this dog, and I'm not a little dog person. Then there's my RottSharpei mix - and my fabulous vet. I adopted him shortly after my beloved rott to cancer. Picked him up on Sunday, by Friday knew something was terribly wrong. He spent the weekend at my vets - she advised not to get my hopes up, wasn't sure what was wrong and if she could save him. Save him she did, and that only cost me $150! She's amazing. I'd spent thousands on ACL surgeries for my rotti, both rear legs, and one of them 3 times! All depends on the dog, my financial circumstance at the time, and what the quality of life would be. I have a 14 year old smooth collie who I love dearly, but she's starting to show signs of age, and outside normal medical exams and the incontinence meds, I don't know what other expenses I'd be willing to incur at this point in her life. Keep her comfortable, make sure she's happy and loved!

As long as I have a Visa, and if the attention is both necessary and beneficial, I would not count the money. Just
spent about 500 on my cat for dental surgery and a reaction to the antibiotic, which caused her to have to be
re-admitted. She is 15, and I would do most anything to keep her around as long as I can. All cats are jewels, but
she is a treasure. My silver Ocicat, Yasmin the beautiful.

I've had 2 rotts in the last few years. One I lost in the custody battle...Lady had 2 ACL replacments in 6 months, both to the tune of $1300 each. Grace had her right ACL done in February and will need her left ACL done soon. So...there's about $5000 total.

There's layers to this question.
I've learned to kind of become my own vet, at least to an extent.
Especially with what are considered 'exotic' pets (around here, that ,means anything other than cats & dogs), any type of vet vist or treatment could be very expensive AND you don't even know if the vet even knows what they're doing.
Many don't......

It depends upon the level of comfort that the pet would sustain from a procedure and the duration.

I agree with those who said it depends on the quality of life the animal will have afterwards.

There is no limit when it comes to my dogs. I spent over 2,000 in one month when both had some problems.

Depends on the treatment. I spent around $2000 for my older dog Baby, who passed away, on her arthritis treatment. I love my babes.
