Do we have the odds set against us on actually finding a connection on DH, or is success just luck? I get the feeling most of the time that those I chat with have no intention of taking it any further than chatting even though they list 'long-term' or 'dating' as their preference. Is this just a "introductory to relationships" site?

You make some excellent points here. Whether you communicate with someone online or offline, the risks are pretty much the same. The only difference is the medium by which you first established contact.
If you meet someone off line, pretty much they are on a dating site, chat online, or on some free forums to meet potential dates. In other words, there is ALWAYS competition even if you are in a relationship sometimes. There are some people who will be sneaky behind your back, are deceptive, play games etc albeit on or off line.
And then you have those who are decent for the first month or two to lure you in then do a double 360.
Then you have those that think everyone is perfect and with the first light mistake, they leave and are no better off then where they were before they met ya.
Then you have truly sincere people with their flaws looking to meet people for a possible long term relationship.

If there are odds involved then there is always the chance. But for me, you just can't sit there and expect everything to just happen. Sites such as these are just tools to set you in a direction. You have to start peddling and gain momentum to get to your destination.

YOUR chances are just as good as anyone else's. It is a bit of luck and a bit of good timing. I always say--if it is meant to be--it will be. So keep trying and just have fun on here.

I think it is partially luck. For we are all going into this without a clue of who we will meet. We may have a plan of the type of person we want to meet, but that changes or they are too far, or other factors get involved. So is it luck, in some part. Isn't that what makes if so fun though?

I agree with Wiley on this one. I also think it involves patience and to a certain degree, timing. What are the chances that your perfect match is going to be on this site at the same time you are? Pretty slim. If you keep an open mind and don't expect too much, you may be very surprised by the people you meet.
