1. No
2. Yes

Isn't it high time we get rid of slave owners on our money then? Monuments to them in DC? Disregard the documents they signed, as they were clearly immoral people?

Come on people, let's not take half measures

I don't think it's a zero-sum proposition. Some people have a knee-jerk reaction of taking things to their furthest natural conclusion to try and draw a correlative point between the issue at hand and the presumptive'end game' (yes, I'm looking at you Rush 'The American Flag is Next' Limbaugh).

Why would there be a need to do such things? From my understanding, there's no public outcry for it.

Does a principled government do what's right, or just react to whims of the population?

It's not a quid-pro-quo in most cases. It can do both. Besides...it doesn't have much of a choice given the fact that his is indeed a republic and a representative democracy (...in theory).

Well, technically yes: but the prospect of that happening assumes three very unlikely things:

1. There is one single universal set of morality.

2. The majority of Americans can be made to agree on that standard.

3. A representative government would not reflect similar morals to the majority (and thus have the will and/or political capital to act against their constituents).

There is a universal set of morality, and it's really simple.

Do whatever you like, so long as you don't harm others, persons or property.

The main problem is government violates this simple tenant, with its very existence.

A universal moral code like that would never see it's way past a generation or two without the ability to protect it from organized threats. In a free society like that after all...some folks will use their 'freedom' to break said moral code. You get more than one of those people to agree on such an action and now you have a threat greater than one free man (even with a gun) can logically address on his own.

Also (arguably more importantly): other more organized entities would carve us up like a Christmas turkey (not unlike we did to other civilizations).

If it will keep blacks from killing whitey and raping his women, so be it.

Point proven.

That actually took less time than I expected. Any way.

Your "suggestions" go too far, I think. Take them off the money? I don't care. Eliminate the monuments to them? Saves money on tax-payer maintenance.

But disregard the documents they wrote? Erase our entire History?

That's obvious, or at least SHOULD be obvious nonsense.

We have steadily CORRECTED the documents they wrote, to eliminate the support for slavery that was built in to them. Continue to do that.

Your "completely erase our history" comment makes it clear that you personally are being entirely sarcastic and negative in this thread.

So, should we seriously discuss the ideas behind your sarcasm? Yes.

Should we use this thread as a model to do so? Nope. It's not designed to do that.

If people look at some monument and are moved to believe that other races are naturally inferior to their own, then yes, we should take it down.

No, symbols and monuments are just that. Moving graves to appease peoples wittle feewings is beyond stupid. All of these actions against things from history is just proof positive Americans are pussies.

Balderdash. You are NOT serious about tossing out the Constitution. If you were, then you would be lying when you say "I'm playing off the ridiculous flag drama to make a very serious point."

You can play it one way or the other, but not both. So which is the lie?

You realize I'm an anarchist, right? You realize a flag is an inanimate object, right?

Government is immoral, and pretending banning a flag will do anything helpful for race relations is ridiculous

Are those two positions really mutually exclusive in your mind?

No, since you didn't post that you [think you] are an anarchist in this thread, I did not know that. But being an anarchist does not excuse a failure to reason logically.

Yes, I know that a flag is inanimate, unless it's made from living creatures. Do YOU realize that what a flag symbolizes is NOT inanimate? And that what flags symbolize is what the concerns and arguments are about, and not the fabric they are printed on?

As for "pretending that banning a flag (which has NOT been done, and has not been seriously proposed) will do anything helpful for race relations" being ridiculous, that has not been done. No one is PRETENDING that it will help race relations for the governments of states to reverse their ancestors decisions to build race-based symbology into their flags, and to purposely use symbols of the Confederacy to demonstrate their opposition to racial equality. They are actively and directly pointing out correctly that it will.

And yes, your "positions" ARE mutually exclusive. Not just in my mind, but in the real world. If you were ACTUALLY an anarchist, you would be OPPOSED to governments using flag symbology to declare their support for oppression of the people of their states.

But you clearly SUPPORT the governments continuing to directly support racial inequality, while you PRETEND that you oppose all governments.

Zen emoti yourself some time, and you MIGHT be able to reason a little more honestly with yourself.

I object to all government flags as oppressive to all people, while you single out the Virgina battle flag.

I can't have an honest debate with a man who thinks he knows more about what goes on in my mind than I do

Edit: Do you object to a giant phallic symbol erected in DC to honor a slave owner?
