============================================
Melissa Mejia, 18, was stunned and embarrassed when officials at William Cullen Bryant HS in Long Island City, Queens, told her she had met all the requirements to receive a diploma in June. She knew she hadn’t. Teachers say Melissa is just one of a number of students magically given credits for classes they failed in an effort by administrators to raise Bryant’s graduation rate. She told her story to The Post’s Susan Edelman.
I don’t like receiving what I would call a handout, but that’s what happened.
New York City gave me a diploma I didn’t deserve.
I had a lot of trouble getting up in the morning. I didn’t really go at all. I think I showed up about five times in the first marking period. In the second marking period, my attendance was also poor. I got a 55 for both, an “F.”

This is a true story. My Sister in law taught school in Titusville Florida and she marked students according to their performance. When the principle brought her into the office he asked her to mark the kids on a curve or else they would lose funding and their grade level would drop.

No, Melissa, NYC didn't give you the diploma...your school's principal did. I bet you weren't the best student around, approaching graduating age and he/she (the principal) wanted to be out of you.
I bet he/she changed your "55" to a passing "65"....Principal have such prerogative. Nauseating.

It's not just high school kids it's college graduates as well. They are getting into over $100,000 in debt, to have an education far less than high school of fifty and more years ago.

I believe that Falcon. Used to be you were guaranteed a job with a college education, now the college kids are having to take lesser jobs and those being filled by foreigners then floods the market with college grads all out of work and they become a dime a dozen, especially for the Bachelors Degrees. The debt incurred is astronomical for that, how the heck can they afford their Masters unless they stay living with mom.

This has been going on for decades !
In my senior year I was so bored that I cut school about twice a week ...
I NEVER read a book .... But , when I did show up at school I took great notes ....
At the end of the year they figured out that my truancy was faked .
And they called my mom .... When they showed her my signed sick forms ...
She asked them ... Why I was graduating with honors ???

Of course she wants something she didn't work for. She had no issue taking that diploma, sleeping in, while her parents didn't care about her or her education. So if this plays out in a suit, make her parents pay it and do the time, the truancy requires. Fire whoever signed to this, take their licences and keep the responcibities off the tax payers.

So they can go on to college and get a subsidized loan or go for free! Not only are there no longer true standards in school, there are lesser standards and requirements for college. Napr started a thread recently with an excellent college topic utube. Narrator definitely has some good common sense. If you listen to it you'll learn why this happens and even into college.. which makes the truly bright and promising ones no longer stand out above the ones who would obviously be deficient in every aspect..
Sprinkles for everyone.

Jim, please, are you aware of the large number of students who drop -from any / all colleges- during the first semester? Are you also aware that the government has to provide you with free education ONLY up to the HS level?

When you see the grammer and speech sometimes you wonder how the heck they passed English.
And the problem begins in grammar school. Listen to Noam Chomsky on education to find the answers.

In HS and college you are supposed to know how to read and write properly; the pedagogues in these two levels are there to impart knowledge on different subjects...no to teach what it was supposed to be learned at the grammar school level.

Everything you describe is the same Noam Chomsky says in his conference on education...the only difference is he provides you with examples that will make your hair to jump up and down.

Guilty of the one, I catch myself all the time a lot. LOL
The contractions, which are considered slang have become one word without the apostrophe.
Duchessa, I friend of mine went to college and was getting her credits while still a senior in high school, she had 36 before graduation. She told be that in her advertising class the ads had to be geared for a 3rd grade level.

Many good students take college credits (AP) while in HS....but, as usual, depends on the teacher to recommend the good ones for these courses.
My AP classes were attended ONLY by students whose attendance was nearly perfect (other subjects) and had a 90 to 95 point average in my class (Spanish Lit.)
And no, people, no everybody who has a Spanish surname speak said language correctly...in fact, most of the kids born in USA to Spanish speaking parents don't speak Spanish at all.

this makes me think about the testing scandal down in Georgia. At least some of
the people involved did go to jail. That is what needs to happen to those people who
ran this school.
