Hey everyone!

I'm in the process of getting my professional life in order, so I"m not quite ready for a dog yet, but when I get a new apartment, I would like to get a dog. Now, I love big dogs, and I know people say that apartment life is okay for some, but my own personal view is that bog dogs should have big yards. THat's just me though...anyway,

So I"m tihnking about getting a small dog, but I've never met a mellow terrier. I'm just wondering if such a thing exists. I hate yippie snappy dogs. I just wanted to know if anyone could give me their honest opinion/suggestion on a small, mellow dog that won't relieve me of my achilles tendons when I least expect it.

Thanks!

Westies are a fairly easy-going terrier, and very popular. They're smart, good with people, good with other dogs, and I see an overwhelming number of them at the dog parks. They all seem fairly consistent in temperment.

Yorkies are not really mellow, but they're so tiny that your tendons will be left intact. Another option is a Boston Terrier. They are usually 10-15 lbs, but can get as big as 25 lbs. They're a nice option for people who like large dogs, but live a small dog lifestyle. They can be rambunctious, so you have to search to find one with a mellow personality.

Please go to your local shelter and adopt a small dog. Sometimes mutts make the most wonderful companions in the world!! And you may even find a pure breed there...but at least your saving an animal....

I adopted a chi/Aussie shep mix. He is smart, quiet, loving. And, small. Go to a dog show if you can, or look at
some breed books or Dog Fancy. Pedigreed dogs are wonderful, you know what you are getting. If you adopt,
you must be strong, for you are picking one to save. There are great dogs (and cats) who would be so grateful for
a loving home...

Ya know, there are just some breed mixes that make you wonder "how the heck did that happen?!?" A chihuahua/austrailian shepphard mix is DEFINITELY one of those mixes.

I agree that you should check out your local shelter first. They will probably have some great dogs and you will save a life. But I did want to let you know about a great dog that is never mentioned anymore...the Miniature Shnauzer. I had two of them growing up and both were very calm and not yappy all the time at all. In fact the second one I had was so well behaved, I still can't remember a nicer dog.

My massage therapist has a miniature schnauzer. She suggested the breed to me when I began looking for another dog, but cautioned that they have a tendency to wander off. My uncle also has one. I asked him about the wandering thing & he said that's how he acquired his and that he's had the same issue with the dog. They just don't let the little guy off leash in unfenced areas unless they can keep a close eye on him. I was really impressed by how sweet and quiet the dog was. He also seemed very attentive to his family.

I think all pedigreed breeds have some negative qualities as well. Chi's are very popular in my region, as are
poodles. Poodles have a bad rep, and I don't personally care for their look, but they are great dogs. Smart,
people oriented, trainable. I had a minature fox terrier, and though active, she was a fun dog! I don't like
hairy dogs myself, I like to see muscle and body shape. A breed which is very smart is the Mexican Hairless.
Don't laugh at the name, and it is also called some with an "X'... blanking out right now. There are also coated
puppies, and a breeder in the Delta area breeds only coated dogs. They are one person dog, sharp, even tempered
dogs. As for Pepe, my whatever-he-is mix, he is smart, not hyper, does not bark or whine, wants to please.
That's about all I want in a doggie! He is a pretty boy, too, black and white with eye and lip "liner" and the
tulip ears of some kind of shep/collie showing up!

People don't realize how many pure breed dogs end up in shelter...
and almost every state has breed specific rescues.
So if it's a pure breed you want, there are many options without the high price tags that breeders have.

As for small mellow dogs..
I have a shih tzu and she is wonderful
