Gangsta rap is a genre of hip-hop that reflects the violent lifestyle of inner-city youth. Gangsta rappers often defend themselves by claiming that they are describing the reality of inner-city life, and that they are only adopting a character, like an actor playing a role, which behaves in ways that they may not necessarily endorse.
Gangsta:
Gangsta rap is a form of hip-hop, also called rap music, first became a popular and controversial art form in the 1990's. 'Gangsta' is a corruption of the spelling of 'gangster.' Gangsta rap on the whole tends to reference illegal activities including gang involvement, trouble with the law, prostitution and many references to violence. Gangsta rap, which grew out of the black neighborhoods of Los Angeles, has been popularized by artists like Snoop Dog and Tupac Shakur, is distinct from the more mainstream rap of artists like Hammer and De La Soul.
Rap:
Rappers often defend themselves by saying that they're only depicting actual inner-city struggles, not promoting it. Rappers write about what they know and have seen, experiences that most of us should pray we never have to endure. Rappers become "gangsta" when they talk about violence, even if in only a metaphorical way.
