Missed again; Reason, fact, figures etc is nothing compared to blind stupidity. Dont even try to fight it. A fool was standing in front of a dressed HD we had in the shop in San Diego,"Harley, theres the only motorcycle worth havin' an' ridin" he says. Now, in the shop at that time we have a 67BSA, a Yamaha V Max, a kawa Z9, and others I feel as a motorcycle Mech were well worth riding. I point out that for what he would pay for the HD, he could buy a new Japanese bike, a used light plane, and take time off in Baja. He did'nt understand. Missed again is right, emotional reasons I understand, but it wont give anyone the penis they lack,only Aircraft do that!

I agree with ya. Way back when I had a 77 Honda 750 4K. The guys I rode with took a couple down to Mexico and such... Well... Guess who was allways holding us up.. you got it, the Harley D's. Now grant it it was usually the sporsters, but still... If I ever have another bike ... I want an old BMW... Thats dependability!

Well, like it or not Harley is the granddaddy of bikes in the country.
I have had one nonstop since 1972 starting with my first a 1942 45 WLA
basketcase that I rebuilt and road for many years till I bought my first
superglide,then a roadking and on to,
my current that I built myself from the ground up
on top of that the jap bikes are mostly aluminum motors,IE junk when
they do ware out not so for Harley they can be bored to 80 thousands
much like a car engine and be rebuilt almost forever assuming proper care,
if I still had my wla Ill bet I could still find parts IE, Jugs, Rings, Rods,Ect...
also Harley isnt just a name
it is a life or lifestyle if you will for for many.
something every dedicated Harley rider knows, and it shows.

Only been riding about 45 years so I'm no expert. I owned alot of different bikes over the years but three that really stand out were my Honda 750 4cyl a 67 Sportster that I rode for many years (just stretched alot of chains) and the Bike I have now which is a 2000 Fatboy with carb and stage II. It's comfortable and has been extremely dependable.
When I get too old and weak for a big bike, I'll probably get a Honda 250 Rebel.
It's not necessarily the bike, it's what you get out of it.
Keep the "Rubber on the road" and enjoy whatever you ride!

To me, it's one of the last few things that represent America. The only problem came about when I started seeing the name on just about everything. I mean, a tattoo or a patch, but then ashtrays or trashcans? I know HD made money off the name and that's "business" but I had more respect when they stood behind their bikes. What's next?
Baby diapers? Funny they used to get their parts from the Davis Sewing Maching Factory in Ohio. Where my grandpa worked after they chased him out of N. Carolina for runnin' moonshine. It seems he was pretty good at mechanical things, and according to the family stories, even designed a motor for some company...he never got the credit, and they ripped off his design...but that's according to the family stories. Yep, that was Grandpa

Oops! I went off topic. I guess I got hooked on Harleys when my dad pulled up on a full dresser and took me for a ride when I was 3 yrs. old. I could read,..barely, and read Harley D on the tank. I screamed my head off until we were almost back to the house, then didn't want to get off. My parents were divorced by then, and my mom wasn't too happy that my dad had showed up at grandmas house. Then grandma sold her house, bought herself a full dresser and hit the road (all 5'6" of her) with my dad at the age of 55. We didn't get to see dad or grandma much after that and she just wanted us to know our father. I guess mom was mad cause our daddy took off with her mommy...
Later I went up the coast of 101 to Big Sur on hairpin turns and that was cool. Inland the next day, the bike blew a flat and we sat in the road doing 55. I'm the only one that got hurt, with a big patch of road rash on my back leg. I still got back on the bike and rode back to LA from just south of Frisco.
Been said you aren't a biker till you've dumped your bike and/or gotten road rash.
I'm too old to get on the back of a bike anymore. I would rather own one anyway, and drive it myself. I'm not some "biker chick" and did my own thing anyway. If I got a Harley, it would be an old one, preferrably a full-dresser.I heard HDs were made in Japan for awhile. In fact, you can take the Honda label off a Honda and sometimes you can't tell the difference.
Indians are pretty, and Norton and BSA are OK too.

If you dont know how to kick.....you ant got a clue. If it's got turn lights on it...what good is it to have a left arm? When you can shut down a 900rr with a 30 year old bike..life is good. What have you earned riding the iron butt...with rear shocks? The best Part of being a biker....is your brother! I am not a Harley fan at all, but I understand those that do ride them. I have a slight bias for British Bikes my self. Even if at times the Jap bikes were better, more reliable, they just did not " stir " the heart the way my Brit rides have.
So yea, I understand the appeal to others even though Harleys do not stir my heart in any way. Matter of love compared to like!

I always had an attraction to Italian Bikes. Moto Guzzis, Ducatis and one of the nicest looking bikes ever, I think was a Laverda.
Ive had a Honda 80, Yamaha 185, Honda 305 and 3 Nortons. Next season, now the kids are gone I want to do some serious touring. I`ve been looking at a new Triumph Sprint ST.

Americans are obsessed with excess. It's not socially acceptable to be a good steward of your money. Society, magazines, movies - everything teaches us "spend more money on something that's less functional = your'e awesome". One need look no further than HD, 22" wheels, or that 756,890 square foot house for Jim & his wife... that cost 1/8 the the cost just a few years earlier, and costs 4x as much (after mortgage, tax, insurance...) as their previous rental.
Can't wait for good value to be in vogue again.

Well,
Maybe I got Lucky ???
I bought my first Harley, o1 electric Glide , I now have 127,000 miles on it , with only
regular maintance... Tires brakes, oil changes etc.... never been back to a Dealer...
Lovered iot so much, I also went & bought a Hertiage Softail, 01 used , now with 47,000 trouble free miles....
Think the trick is to RIDE then, not let them sit , clocting dust ...
Just my 2 cents ...From a Happy Harley owner.
yes, I have jap bikes 2. A suzuki, My lady learned to ride on , (for sale) & a Kawaski, in my shed , that I use to Race... 4 sale also...

The question still remains: why are YOU attracted to women / bikes that cost more, do less, and are less reliable (I don't care if you come in here, and got 100,000 miles worry-free on YOUR individual bike, there's more than enough data to show the crap reliability reputation US bikes have vs Jap bikes) than their Japanese competitors. And, quit blaming YOUR inability to describe to me WHY it's the bike of your choice on me. If you can't describe something, it's not my fault. I'm listening.

Harley Davidsons are a American Icono...I love mine and the new sportsters are really great my pick is the street glide. with that said. when I was a teenager I had a 550 honda that I never changed the oil ever. just tires and rode it on and off road. it never would die.great bike. but Im sold on the new harleys there Bullet proof. and yes women that you take for a ride on them ""love them""
