It seems to me your discussing possibilities with a negative perspective (yeah, it's me again). What WILL you do? What chances WILL you take? No matter what we tell ourselves, we are not thru making mistakes and embarrassing ourselves. So give up on dignity, just keep the integrity.
Build your own freakin' group. Me the dog (now dogs) would go to the beach and I was too shy (oh, yes I am) to speak to anyone. So I made up flyers for a dog hike and handed them out. Some showed up, we made the hike, some people met some people and drove off together as I sat there alone and went "Hmmmmmmmm".

I didn't read the OP as questioning "what would we do?" I saw it as a "why" and responded in kind.
