The person winks in hope that you will send a wink back so that they know you are interested. This way when he/she sends you an email, there is more confidence in receiving a response.

OK how about this...I am not a fan of the winks unless they come from someone I already know. I think of them as drive-by attempts at flirting. However If I am attracted to you (pic and profile) I will wink back and hope for an email or I will email and ask you to write something. Depends on my mood. Overall I agree your best bet is to take the minute and 1/2 and write an email.
For whatever reason the majority of the winks tend to come in from the picture-less and the guys with little or no profile information...those I delete.
As to all the SHY comments...we are on-line dating here! Are you kidding???

Why even complain about receiving winks. It's a positive form of communication. Better a wink than a nasty email.
Men and women who send winks may be a little shy. Most times they want to initiate communication that way to see if they would get a response back and if they do, more than likely they will initiate conversation.
Now if you wink back and they either wink back at you or don't respond at all, simply move on. But from my experiences, those who have winked at me first and I followed back with a wink, 95% of the time those ladies started conversation with me.
Another reason why some send winks is because many a time they have sent messages only to see their wasted messages simply get deleted. So we do know that many emails simply get deleted.
These are probably the top reasons why people send winks.
Right as always 'thebestman'.
I have sent a 'wink' or two since joining but after seeing some of the feedback about 'winks'I stopped and started sending an email... You know the deleted ones.

Is it saying "wink .. I like you.. now you message me back?
Yep, it is and i think most people that send them don't really have anything to talk about

I am finding that for the most part the winks are just a flirt. A little flattering, but no big deal. Many people will just go through a whole bunch of profiles, sending winks to all those they find attractive in the picture.
I just smile and delete

I think winks are excellent icebreakers.
When I get a wink and if they seem interesting, I send a nice email saying "thanks for the wink". It is up to them, to send a reply back if they are truly interested.
However, it is sad to say. So many of these men who wink, that is all they do. Wink over and over. I never respond to a second wink, much less the 50th wink.

You got that, women? For those of you women who hate winks, this is why some men send them. Message deleting has become an epidemic for some of you females.
I know that's right!
A good number of females delete messages. Even respectful messages get deleted.
What a bunch of no-good sacks of lard.
