I just bought a farm--does that count?? Actually I think the area is a federal witness relocation area--People that buy hay and take it home in Cadillacs. Stand in their fields in Gucci shoes. Wonder what the big animal is that people ride on ( a horse). And I swear to God--it still says "NO NI___RS" at the gas station.

NOPE--life style change and wanted something different. I certainly have found it. The property was a wood mill for many years. I am doing firewood for now--it really isn't a good place for raising crops. Taking down trees and selling firewood is the main focus for now. I still work a government job and it has been a very nice way to relieve the stresses of the job. OH YES--the bears come down and shake the apple trees to get the apples to fall--- that is always a surprise when I am outside and working around the property.I don't bother them and they don't bother me.

By way of explanation, I will explain it by saying that the families are selling farms that are no longer profitable or the children of the owners no longer want to have a farm life. Some farms are now housing tracts. You can buy a farm for a song out here. My property is wooded, mostly on a mountain, and was a wood mill. The machinery is gone. The house itself is 300 years old--all rock walls and hand hewn plank floors and beams. I just put the new boiler and heat system in but fireplaces are still the best way to heat it. The county history of the property shows mines were once in the hills, there was a nice well kept apple orchard, and the assessment included the outbuildings that are now, sorely in need of attention. I have pulled a rusted plow out of the overgrown wooded area--the plow is from 1909. I have cleaned it up and it is displayed at the head of the driveway.

Farmland around here is going for $5500 and acre now. Unless you are a bored millionaire, you would never start a new small farm here.

There are NO dairy farms here anymore---tankers no longer pick up from any places in this area. The corn is going to be feed--no one has harvested it yet--all dried out and now they are cutting halloween mazes into the corn fields...for the kids. There is only one game bird raising place left--the others have been sold off or abandoned. Horse farms are now for sale---boarding horses has completely gone by the wayside. I just wanted the change from my normal day to day life.

City peaple have ben buying a lot of the farms around hear the last few years as they were the onlyone's that could aford the land, except for the really big farm operators that just add a section or two out of their goverment payment each year. I see this may change now with the economy today and perhapps weed out more of the city peaple? Land will still be high as long as grain prices hold. Land hear is $3000 to $4000 per acer mostly with pastureland $900 to $1500 and dryland around $2000 to $2400 but expect biger fluxuations in up comeing sales as some may not bring whats expected? and some will or exceed expectations. Everyone is wondering just now about everything!!

I guess I'm a country boy... them city women ain't too happy with my country upbringing and I don't care too much for the way they tend to want everything so convenient. I much prefer to be out in the real world and not on asphalt. So, what makes a country boy a country boy? I'm somewhere between like Mayberry and Country...small town, got an education, but still returned to country living.
