#1 are not affected by the economy.
#2 gives u a somewhat flexable sceduale to help raise the kids.
My job as a self employed carpenter has been great on the flex part but has always been stressfull on when the work is coming in. I used to frame just new construction but since june of 07 there has been very little to none. I switched over to more of the home improvment side and now no one is even fixing thier house...lol
A couple more years my girls will be much more self sufficent, but for now i really need that flex part.....any thoughts are welcome....

Gosh Dear,
I am almost the same boat.....self employed due to the fact that I need the flexibility to be there for the kids..........I am (and I know it) very, very lucky a few clients have cut back services, I have picked up a great new client who has work for me through till March..........I am a little afraid of what spring will bring.
Things I had thought about: School Bus Driver, School Custodian, School Lunch Coordinator.......see the pattern, somewhere with the kids schedule

I know, being on the line here.... There are a few people fixing up their houses but not many.... one down the street from work put additions on both ends and is now siding the whole thing.... must be nice to have the $.
But the retail aspect of home improvement has been pretty slow though for a couple months.

I have a perfect house to use the whole basement as a daycare.. Now i can play with kids all day and have a huge list of activities, but the paperwork and legal side of things im at a loss...Hire someone?? will this job even support me.?..lol
It always seems to be a nasty battle only to end up hitting a brick wall..working for the school system wld be nice but its a matter of gettin in and like most is flooded with appicants these days..

hm. Not that I was actively looking before but with the way things are going I'm hanging on to my job, I wouldn't even attempt a change right now. Though I have to say, I do like my workplace and that makes it a lot better.

It's safe to assume everyone is feeling the pain.
I work in the power sports industry and we have temporarily laid off quite a few people due to the fact that either no one is buying recreational vehicles or they are being repossessed.
Only advice I can give is to hang in there

I Just found out last week (before vacation) that my company just bought 2, thats right , 2 new companies in Canada, which means in about 6 months to a year, all of our Canadian business will go to them and thats a HUGE chunk of our budget. Businesses in New England are closing down, and its tough for our sales guys to get new business. In short, corporate just threw the CT division under the bus. They have about 5 more locations, and one of them is in Maine, they dont really need 2 in New England....see where this is going?

Good luck,
I am too looking for work that is flexible enough so I can raise my five year-old. It seems I am always paying for daycare, before school care, after school care all just to work with children.
I am presently looking for work in the Valley. I usually work in social service out of New Haven. However, I most recently worked in news reporting and newspaper advertisement sales but the economy has hit the newspaper industry really really hard and nonprofit have really taken a hit with grant funding also.
So, I really understand. Why don't you develop a quick and cheap website of your work and put the site link on Connecticut Chat so people here can network for you.
Better yet, create a post so others can create a thread of services they provide.

Now with the economy the way it is and this being the first winter in over twenty years I haven't gotten any new calls for spring work (yet, there is still time)
I have been looking into what will people be spending their money on during these times......so, far what I am coming up with is, well, you see, what is projected to have an increased need, now mind you this is just from my research and well, I have been wrong a time or two..............the fast food industry.......whether it's pizza or a deli......people are going to be working longer hours trying to make the income they are use to or they're going to not be working.......either way the family meal as we know it will be a thing of the past for many.......just food for thought.
I am always researching different ideas.......

YES...I have tried advertiseing before (not on-line) but in the papers and in my trade most of what you get is ppl just playing the # game...at this point they no nothing about quality....so ya spend a few hours chattin with them to see what they want, and then a few hours coming up with a very tight quote...mix all this with working, raiseing the kids, scedualing, keeping the house up, so on and so forth......when you dont land up getting the job 90% of the time....doing quotes and dealing with home owners quickly gets yanked from the sceduale....
It just seems to be a job all on its own...
I guess this recession is going to stretch into late 09..OMG..
other things i still see booming.....
dunkin donuts always has a line..
cell phone companies...

Motorider - I know first hand what you mean. I had my own handyman business for a little over 3 years but I found charging by the hour worked much better - I would never give estimates and then Nov Dec 07 hit and you know how the economy turned. Needless to say- not good. I did my last job in January 08 and started looking for employment again. Just when the savings account reached $100.00 and the checking reached $0.00 I had luck on Monster.com - interviewed a lot of places,. but most people were reluctant to hire someone who had their own business before(sad to say). I finally got hired by a shopping mall as a maintenance man. I rode the train to work and one day, this woman needed help with her bag, we started talking and before I got off for my stop, she handed me her business card and said to call H.R. to set up an interview. She was the CEO of the company.
I went to two interviews and was hired. What a relief!!!! Gave the Mall notice and started working at the company in June.
Polish up that resume even if you do not use it know- At some point it will come in handy.
For all that have their own business. When I had mine, I belonged to this great group - Business Network International. Look into them www.BNI.CT.com

Sure, but do you really want to sell donuts and cell phones. Can you branch out into businesses that need your kind of work. Have you looked into the Valley Chamber of Commerce, Schools, Churches. Churches especially needed people around who need extra work. Have you looked into the cities that get contracts to get work done.
It is difficult balancing work and family responsibility. Most of my work has been in social service but the cutbacks make finding work impossible. Also, I worked in the newspaper industry. I also owned my own organic cleaning service and finding clients was really hard but I kept up at it. I am presently writing and looking to return either back to social service or news writing or ad sales.
However, when i worked full time the jungling was impossible. I remember a day years ago when I was working on a fundraising campaign on the computer, talking on the telephone with my exhusband on how to handle our son's dental appointment because I mailed him three insurance cards and talking to my boss about attending a late night meeting while he stood in front of me.
I thought I would go crazy. When I got out of work 12 hours later, I went out for a glass of wine and wondered if this insanity was worth it. Raising children and making money is hard. Life can be hard but you have to stay strong and be creative.
