Did you ever have a once in a lifetime dog? I did. I was blessed. He was going to be put down at a shelter at 5 weeks. His ears were full of maggots, and worms were coming out of him. He was skin and bone. We lookedinto each others eyes and there was a sparkle..something magic. I took him before this woman surrendered him to the pound. My Vet wanted to put him down, but I asked for her OK to let me get drugs at the local pharmacy for him (they'd call her). It took time and care. He weighed 3 pounds. I named him Bruno. He had huge feet and a sheperd look. I went out and bought a 26 inch collar for him! I told people he was going to be huge. He was house trained in a day (learned the doggie door)..was able to walk under my c*cker spaniel! Well, He grew to 160 pounds. The collar fit! He was a sheperd/great dane mix! Smart? I never had to tell him or show him anything more than once or twice. He knew right from wrong on his own and had reasoning abilities! He swam like a fish, Climbed mountains like a goat, was a loyal and loving family pet. When My son was born, he slept next to his crib guarding him. He was protective of the entire family. We had a prowler in our backyard in the middle of the night. He charged out there with another dog I had..MOJO..not very smart, but loyal and protective..LOL. They TORE HIM UP! I had to call the police and an ambulance while the dogs and I held him at gunpoint. On another occasion I was out of the country. I was supposed to be home that night, but missed my flight. That night, there was a home invasion at my house. My wife and 2 small children were alone. Bruno by himself forced the intruders out, injuring both of them. There was blood all over the entryway and the front porch. He saved my family. Not only was he kind and gentle, but when needed he was courageous and fearless. He was my fishing buddy, my hiking buddy, my all around friend. When he was 10, his hips started going bad. He was on horse medication! I asked the Vet how long. He said I'd know when the time came. At 11 1/2 years, he came to me dragging his hind legs. He was paralyzed. I put him down.
I HAD LOST MY BEST FRIEND! I'm crying as I'm writing this because not only did I love him, but GOD had blessed me with IF YOU ARE LUCKY, MY ONCE-IN-A-LIFETIME DOG. R.I.P. BRUNO!

I had that once in a lifetime dog like your Bruno. Tater was a part pit and ?? but the best dog. He was a mutt and a runt, his mom was an ally dog who had her litter under the shed at the house I lived at in TX at the time. I would take leftovers out for the pups after they got bigger and would come out. Being the runt he would get push out by the rest of his litter. But I would get a hold of him and he never really tried to get away from me and I would take him inside and feed him something good. One time I had some left over scalloped potatoes and took them out to the pups, well this time that little pup fought his way in to them. That is how he got the name Tater, plus he was about the color of one and had these little dots over his eyes. The name just fit him.
I could write a book on him and what a good dog he was and my love for him. He is gone now and I have a small little chichahua that sometimes I could swear he has some of the same traits as Tater. It's kinda funny in a way.

Spike was our beloved pet for the past twelve years and we just put him dow two weeks ago. My son bought him with his holiday money when we visited the pound. Spike was a lad shepherd mix and from day one was just simply the most marvelous friend. We live in a country setting and Spike could roam everywhere and especially loved rolling in the fish guts up at the reservoir which was just down the street. He walked the boys to the bus stop and waited until they were safely on the bus before returning home. He walked with the neighbors on their exercise routes and was beloved by all the neighbors who always had a treat for him. About a month and a half back he stopped walking on his one hind leg and I took him to the vet who said he just was not feeling anything in the leg and gave me some meds because she thought he had lyme disease or arthritis. But if the meds were not effective then maybe it was a degenerative problem or a tumor. Three weeks later as he was crossing the street to get his morning treat from the neighbor, his son in law hit Spike with his truck. He did not see him and Spike howled once and then just limped to the side of the road. I seemed more shaken than he was but I took him to the vet to have him seen. The same vet thought he had been bumped but did not think he was hurt, but suggested we take him to another vet for xrays. The second vet thought there was some injury and wanted to keep him to treat him for shock and to do the xrays. She called an hour later to say that Spike had a badly broken lower leg but that he also had advanced bone cancer and that there was nothing anyone could do for him. There was absolutely no bone at all in the upper part of his leg and she was totally amazed at how this wonderful fellow had adapted and was still going about his daily routine. She suggested that we put him down as he was in terrible pain from the break. Because it was my sons birthday the next day I asked if we could take him home with some meds and bring him back the day after. Well we took turns staying with him as he did not want to be left alone. He was given nothing but people food , baked chicken , his own pepperoni pizza, a large chunk of chhese, chocolate all his secret favorites. Then the time came to take him to the vets. The children across the street were having a party and true to form he trotted over there to see what was going on. A neighbor stopped by to say their goodbyes. I have to admit there have been few events that caused me this amount of pain. Spike is lovingly buried in our backyard wrapped in his blanket with a few rocks (he loved to have you throw them for him). He has a cross lovingly made by my oldest and often a candle is burning to let him know we love him.

I HAVE a once in a lifetime dog....her name is Chelsea but we all call her "Beanie"...don't really know why, but I called her jellybelly bean and "Beanie" just kinda stuck. I have had her since she was 7 weeks old, rescued from an animal shelter and she is now 14 years old. There will never be another like her in my life...she is my baby, my princess, she sleeps with me, has free roam over the house while "mommy" is at work, free roam in the yard, at this point in her life she really isn't going to run off anywhere. And she can still act like the puppy she once was and make me laugh with her antics. She had a mild stroke about a month ago but has bounced back and enjoying her senior years. Here she is, the one and only Beanzilla:

He is laying on the floor next to me now LOL
Picked him from the others because he 4 wheeled over all his siblings to get to me. Even has freaky tendencies that work with mine. Like throwing his empty dishes at me so I could never forget to feed him even if I am an airhead LOL And no pooper scooper for me. Refuses to do his business anywhere but his own yard. Weird, but works for me.

I certainly did! Her name was "Gretchen". She was a beautiful, jet black, full-bred, Labrador Retriever. She weighed about 65-lbs at the time. I lived in Louisiana then. We sometimes got tornados, which I was very fearful of. One day we had the warning and I ran and grabbed her and put her in the tub, I placed a mattress over me. Gretchen somehow managed to slip up over me and covered me with her body and kept her arms over me. When the storm had passed, she actually patted my arms and hopped up out of the tub. It is something I will never forget. I loved her very much, so much unconditional love! We had to let her go to a family who owned a farm and a lake. I know she's happy there. She loved the water too. When I see her pictures, I get very emotional about her. So, I know how you'all feel about your dogs. They are special gifts.

Right now I don't have a dog. I lost my dauchand after 13 years of companionship. Bj always seemed to know my moods especially after my husband died. He'd sit beside me with his head in my lap like he was trying to say he understood. Maybe one day I will get another one.

So far I have had 2. Jessie, who is in my profile with his kids, and Bucky Pictured here. They loved to show and i had so much fun showing them. Jessie did attain his championship, but Bucky did not. Jessie is now a retired couch potato, bossing all the rest of them around. He always was an alpha.
My Bucky is not doing well, he is very ill and I am at the crossroads of having to say good bye. I will miss him dearly as he has the happiest and most fun personality of all my dogs. It is hard to see him fading, but I guess it is time to send him to the bridge.

Bucky, always looking for a cookie!
