"find another friend" ,"tell them to STFU" and tell them good bye .
Who wants to be around a person that complains all the time ?
Unless ,you wanna listen to them complain ,all the time .
If that's the case ,quite complaining about a person that complains all the time .

W.W.J.D. ? If their complaints are within your relm of suposed controol or influance . or resonably associated with you in a fasion that you have something to do with the outcome. Do whats right , be true to yourself and take care of it. If they are an endless selfserving diatribe dumped on you by another person, for their gain ,be it atention or just all they have to talk about . well be as polite as you can and stop them in their tracks , ie. interupt bring it to their atention and move on.

Well it depends you didn't give enough information. If it is one of those people that just complains about anything then I personally would get them out of my life. They would also complain about everything you do too. If it is someone who is just going through a rough patch with the economy and complaining about that kind of stuff, I would give them some slack. So is this person always this way or just circumstances?

I do believe it depends on what they are complaining about.

Some people are just made that way and there is no getting around it.
A lot of that is for attention and the need to be fussed over.

Some go through tough times and having a friend to lean on during that time
is a wonderful thing.

If it is about something they have the ability to change and control, then I
say quit b*tching and start doing something about it.

But complaining about things incessantly that are beyond our control will
drive you batty and who needs that?

I have a couple of friends that are constant complainers. The one calls me on the phone just about every single day. To complain about the same old things over and over. If I am in a not so good mood I let that call go to the answering machine. If I am kind of down I let that call go to the answering machine. When I do answer I try to be encouraging but firm at the same time. Encouraging them that things will be better but THEY have to do something to make it better.
The same with one of my neighbors. Every single day. Again encouraging but firm. And if I am having one of "those" days I simply tell her when she comes in I don't feel good. Usually she will just give a short version of the complaints and go home.

My best friend screws up her own love life and then complains to me about it! I can't help her and if I give her any advice at all, she won't even take it into consideration because it wasn't what she wanted to hear.

Sometimes ppl just complain to get attention. Just reply with simple answers like yeah, uh hu, no way. Maybe they'll get the pt.
