As we all are here to pretty much find some friends or long term relationships. I was wondering about this..

How do you break the ice for the first conversation?

or

The when you meet for the first time, how do you keep the conversation going?

I have had a first meeting a few times now, and after the first 15 minutes it starts to lag and I end up trying to find things to talk about.

So I was wondering what some of you do for that?

Thanks.

Well I have met a few people and I have never run out of things to say of course I like to talk. But before you meet and you have chatted on here you need to talk on the phone first. Find what her likes and dislikes are is she a sport fan and just talk be yourself not someone your not. Have a drink what ever it takes pick something you both like and make that your first place to meet it helps a lot.

I have a two week rule which helps not only break the ice but also ensures I don't meet a sociopath or two in real life (so far, so good). Basically I won't agree to meet anyone I met online until we have chatted online for two solid weeks, no exceptions. I won't give out my phone number until at least a week of that has passed. I have good reason for it as well....

Any man who has something to hide (is actually married and saying he's single, etc.) or has something seriously wrong with him mentally will not be able to hold it together that long without tipping me off at some point or at least making me feel funny and that right there is enough to make me put off the meeting permanently. I always trust my gut instinct because it never lies. Guys don't put enough thought into their lies. It's common knowledge. It's also common knowledge that women remember EVERYTHING a man has said to her. Sooner or later if he's not for real he's gonna contradict himself and it will be glaringly obvious if he's sneaking around or if he's an asshole in disguise or if he has severe homicidal tendancies by then as well.

Occasionally talking to a guy online will send up red flags so fast they actually leave a trail of sparks in their wake.

But for those that make it through that probationary period we've had enough time to find out all sorts of things about each other and by the time we meet in person there is PLENTY to talk about. And that's how I break the ice.

Oh. And then there's the fact that you have to pretty much shove a sock in my mouth to get me to shut up. I've literally driven men away with my endless chattering.

Sometimes they leave skid marks.....

Here's one tip: don't consider any subject "off limits". What I mean is, you know how most people say never talk about religion or politics? If I start to run out of conversation, I'll dive right into those. You may not both agree on the same things, but at least the conversation will be interesting.

Lottsa things are ice breakers..other people,atmosphere,clothes...heck if you can think it speak it..I never put up a front thats like a fatal error..if i'm at ease folks I'm talking to are also..stay away from closed end questions, these require yes/no answers and can kill a good conversation..open ended questions invite opinion and you can draw from her responses to keep the flow going..these forums are open ended questions and comments..hope this helps!

Have your agenda in order. Two ways that can be done if you're gonna go about this in a determined fashion rather than letting nature take it's course is to prepare a plan or outline or just a list of things to talk about. Practice the list until you are comfortable with it. You can keep it for future encounters. I rarely have need for such since I tend to be a talker anyway. I also shoot myself in the foot regularly!
If you need more confidence and have little experience I highly recommend finding a copy of Dale Carnegie's book...How to Win Friends and Influence People. It's an old standard for training salesmen and the golden rule that all other self-help books are measured by. I really wish I knew where my copy of is... I am in dire need of a refresher course. I can tell you that all people love to talk about their small children...and a gift for the kid is gonna win you far more favors than a dozen roses for the lady. You talk on subjects that interest them and not what interests you. If you can't smile then you shouldn't even go on a date. Cheery eyed and bushy tailed is what they used to tell us....be fresh and energetic. I have been on these websites for about a month and have met only one lady and talked on the phone to two others. Yet, I do hope to interview a few more candidates in the very near future...so, I gotta spruce up my own sales approach as well. It may take months of practice online but I have confidence that I will achieve my goal when my time comes and I am ready.

I ask,"how ya doin'?".

Hopefully we have interests in common so we have things to enjoy talking about later, but at first I try to find out, and talk about her interests. I ask what she likes to do for income, what she likes to do for leisure, things like that.
