I don't know every style, and know that a mixture of any of them that you are good makes a good combination.
For me, I mix Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Muy Thai, a little boxing, and Seishin Juku (it's full contact style in Japan - close to Kyokushin).

I think Muy Thai, BJJ, and wrestling would be the best combination. Good wrestling has shown to be very effective in the UFC. Not sure it would be as effective in a ring though.

ldt... that is awesome. Hopefully he has a good teacher, cause that is the real difference of how and what you learn. He should learn discipline, self control, stay in shape, have fun in the process though. Kids have to do games and fun stuff while they learn (or atleast that's the way I taught kids). I will enroll mine in Jamie Webster's cause he is a real good friend and great with kids.... but they will probably want me to teach them after they find out how much I know.
Let me know how he is doing? Maybe I can give you pointers on things to help.
Dustin... you are exactly right... I completely forgot about wrestling, it does help tremendously.

I have trained for 32 years in Traditional Japanese Martial Arts and competed in Japan. The style that I train in and was taught by Shogo Kuniba, Sensei he was a Soke in this Organization. My opinion, Judo, Japan Jiu-jitsu (the original) Aikido, and Karate-jitsu (again the original). I am training several guys now to enter the MMA arena. Hands down the best style for it! Because it is a system, when training in all the other YOU have to put it together, this style is a system so its already done for you!
ldt, it will depend on the style AND instructor that you are with. The instructor is the key, he has to have your sons best interest at hand...so many today its about the dollar. Does the instructor still train with someone, does he teach the classes himself? How often does he train? These are questions that I would ask...then knowing these things you will know how he teaches what your son will learn.
Traditionally speaking, the student is not the most important the Art is the most important, you (the teacher) preserves the Art for the student so that the student may be preserved!
ldt write me if you want to talk more about this!

It is an individual choice. like layering.. What should you have as a base?
Big guys would not want the same as small guys, .. why is this question always so general? there is no "one best combination"
Aikido is budo and japanese jujutsu layered on a background base of judo.. I am curious to see it used in the ring, I would think the circling concepts might have application, for good ballance and movement. and the judo would certainly help- but aikido is gi-on..
much of aikido requires a lapel or sleeve to grab..- or is "small-joint manipulation
', not allowed in MMA... and I see no use for the sawari-wasa training in the ring.. which wasted half of all my dojo time...
My choice would be a base of High school greco roman.. then Judo/aikido to suplement, ,then layered striking skills.. like muai tai and wing chun.. I would want two striking styles..
aikido leg grabs, I think are the best kick defense... screw defending or guarding, , catch his leg and twist...

Without a doubt judo and wrestling, which is actually sambo. The old soviet national sport, which in 1980 was as introduction sport in the olympics. I say this because with judo throws, theorically your already passed the guard of your adversay, with wrestling that slight position advantage is hugh for a wrestler, and I believe you will be able to finish the fight with strikes and or submissions.

I personally think Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), wrestling, and kickboxing are very effective combinations. Each technique will help in different avenues of the fighting.
