Ok all you PC wizards, I am thinking of getting a laptop. Mostly used for when we travel. It wouldn't replace our desktop, just an addition. Any recommendations? Do you like one brand over another? what features do you prefer? I'm new to this type of PC so any help will be greatly appreciated.

TAZ is probably the expert, but I bought a nice one at SAM's club a couple month's back. In my opinion these are nice things to look for and price goes up as their numbers go up:
If this is just for casual chatting, e-mail and web surfing, I recommend getting a net-book instead of a laptop. If you're going to use it for documents, games, and work type of applications, then a laptop is a better choice.
***********
Battery size: this is given by cells and mA. (usually 6 cells). The more cells, and mA, usually the longer the charge unplugged. Both Netbook and laptop.
Dual Core- get the highest speed you can afford and def. dual core for better processing speed. I'd try to get over 2 GHZ if at all possible. Only true for a laptop. I think all Netbooks are still single processor?
Wireless N, or G minimum, probably with a webcam. Both
As much RAM as you can afford. 2 G for a Netbook is plenty, 4 G for a Laptop.
Keep the monitor under 15.3 inches. You don't need to be lugging around all that extra size.
Check the number of USB ports and where they are located. A HDMI port is nice if you want to send downloaded movies to a TV, or monitor.
RW CD/DVD drive.
Well that's about all that I can think of? I'm sure others will weigh in.
Oops- I wanted to add that I prefer HP's or Sony's if you can afford them. I would never buy or recommend a DELL. JMHO

Checkout Comp USA online. I know several people that order from there. If you can checkout FRY's in Downers Grove. I recieved a MSI notebook for Christmas. It cost $399. It's is an off brand but it has a rock'n system. My geek friends took it for a test drive and recommended it. It also is very lightweight and travels well! If price is no object go for an Apple.

The only problem with an Apple is you limit the software you can install.
programs for windows will not run on Apple's operating system for the most part.
Apple laptops are very good, just an off brand by my standards.

have to agree. stay away from dell. they can crash very easily. toshiba's are excellent, and don't cost an arm and a leg.

Toshiba is in my top 3 as well. One other thing about Apple. They won't run Adobe software, in particular all those cute little movies done in Flash!

I suppose if I really wanted it that bad or needed it that would be an option. A last resort. Have to be careful of those places.
