We all probably walk or drive right past potentially great dates/partners every day. It would just be weird, though, to approach them all or be approached by anyone that is looking.
You're turning a corner while driving and catch a man's eye for an instant. You both smile - just being friendly. He does a u-turn, follows you to Kroger and when you get out of your car (if you're brave enough to do that at this point), walks over (has a non-threatening gait) and starts a short conversation with you, eventually asking for your phone number or inviting you to meet him at a function that night downtown or wherever. Assume he's cute enough, seems nice, is not wearting a ring, and you have an unlisted cell phone number or are free to join him that night.
That was meant to come across as creepy, but now that I write it out, it sounds pretty romantic to me. In any case, it's not usual and probably a lot of us would never get out of the car to greet him. Generally, no one's going to that much trouble just to meet someone. Just to meet one person out of at least hundreds in their area with whom they would be compatible and be able to build the life they want with. It's like we want that initial approach/conversation to be risk-free.

This is funny, when my son was 8, he watched blues clues all the time... and I don't know where he found out about the word "divorce," at his age, but we were at my father-in-laws cabin for the weekend, and my son told him.. I wish mom would divorce dad and marry Steve...
My father in law asked me who's Steve?
I asked "what are you talking about?"
Then my son said "Steve from blues clues."
I said that was just a program he watched, but I did think Steve was qute, but he joined a Rock Band, and his cousen Joe now does blues clues I think - he is quter.

I'm recently single and I'm actually enjoying the dating part. I'm not quite sure why some women seem to think if you take them out once or twice that you should be in contact with them several times a day. I'm scared to go out with someone more than twice because I don't want to give them the impression that I'm looking for a serious commitment.
