I've got this Vernon Handley conducted version of Elgar's First on CD. It's top notch stuff and sounds shorter than its 52 minutes when you've heard it a few times. The first movement is an enormous sprawling edifice with lots of twists and turns, and sets out the important "nobilmente" theme that runs through the thing like a spine. In the last movement the theme is revived with knobs on as the work approaches a thrilling climax. One to play in the background while doing the dishes or something.
