As women do you feel challenged when it comes to repairs ..whether for your car..house..etc? Do you think that you are taken advantage of or taken for granted that you won't question the bill or the work? Reason I ask is that I have found lately that had I been a person to just go with the flow and not question what is going on..that they totally would have done me wrong. Over a month ago a tornado came thru here. Tore up my roof and siding on my house and a few other things. Last Friday I received a letter from insurance company and I was floored when I opened it and read they were only going to pay less than $200 to fix my roof!!!!! I kept reading it over and over. They were going to pay more to fix the gutter and downspout on front of the house than my roof for petes sake!! So I called the lady up and asked if it was a typo on the amount for the roof. She said no..that the pictures the adjuster took only showed a few missing shingles!! UNREAL..he is the one that told me he was recommending for my entire roof to be replaced!! Anyways..the pics he sent to her..didn't show all the damage I guess. I told her that I had some guys doing quick patchups so I wouldn't have more damage till it could get fixed. She said well too bad I didn't get pics before it was done....ha ha ha...I told her I did take the pics before and while the guys were up there working on my roof. I had around 20 pics!! So she says to email them to her. Today I get a call and ummmmm she wants a roofing contractor to estimate REPLACING my entire roof!!!! Just imagine had I just been docile and not self sufficient enough to have taken pics and question what they were going to pay!!! Makes you think!! Ok I'm done patting myself on the back. But I'm sure there are others out there with same situations!!

Sassy,

I guess I am pretty lucky in that respect because I have a great mechanic shop that I can go to for car repairs and they do not jerk me around, either. Since I live in an apartment, I don't have house concerns, either! I also have a son who has a Master of Science degree in Computer Science, so if I mess up my computer, he can usually fix it!

What I find is that when men question things like home or auto repairs it is accepted that they know what they are talking about. When we women question these things we are considered a hard b--ch to deal with cuz we don't know anything.

Thank you Deb. You are lucky that you have such good resources to count on. I know how to work on computers myself. Have had computer gurus that tried to take me on fixing a problem with my aunts computer. The guy made a mistake and told me that I wouldn't be able to fix it.... he shouldn't have challenged me.....lol. He said he would fix it for $50 or more..I fixed it for $5!!!

Standing up for yourself and what is right doesn't always seem easy but it is something that has to be done!! An insurance company takes your money for years and the first time you have a claim, well, it's sorry but we're only covering $x.xx. Makes you want to scream! I'm glad that things worked out well for you!

So many people in the 50s group have answered questions for me on things that I try to do for myself because it's not easy being on a fixed income when every time you turn around something is going wrong.

I have learned to jump up and down and scream when people try to overcharge me! I also ask what I can do to cut costs, and sometimes it really helps. I had four very tall, very large pine trees cut down yesterday. When I got the original quote, I told him to re-quote it without clean up and he deducted $200! Figuring I was on a roll, I told him ok, now if I give you this job, what's the bottom line cause I am NOT going to pay what you quoted. Turned out I ended up paying only $200 more than a neighbor did and they only had 2 trees taken down that were nowhere near the size of my 4!

And Moose - Yeap, I Am Woman! and when I get to the Pub - look out - I am going to roar!!

sherry, good for you for fighting back. I used to have a cedar shake roof, and one tornado came near by, tore off 1/5th of mine and the insurance company paid somewhere around $500. I repaired it myself with close to $1500 in just shingles. Not a month later, the next tornado took off 1/3rd. after going round and round with them I was so annoyed. Not only the roof, but water damage down 2 walls in my living room. one was a block walnut paneling that blistered from the water, the other was the front where the 5 arched floor to ceiling windows were damaged. these windows were double paned 2' wide and 7' tall. the insurance adjuster said i would be lucky if the company replaced one slope. the insurance company sent me a check for $2000. I called and told them it was not nearly enough. Asking what I meant, I said cedar is terribly expensive. they informed me I had to replace the whole roof with composite shingles. I told them, well, my home owners association would be pretty upset if I replaced only one slope with reg shingles while the rest was patched cedar. at this point I was extremely upset with them, checked with my home owners association and actually, there was no reason I could not use cedar shingles though outlawed by the city of Houston nearby.

I called some company in CA, ordered 128 squares of redwood shingles at a cost of $550/square. Another $150/sq for installing from a local roofer. I called my insurance company and told them I had ordered the shingles and the company would bill them. Again, the insurance company told me I had to put composite roofing on. I asked them what part of my 'replacement' policy did they not undertand? Big selling point when i bought he policy, wasnt it? After 2 hours, the agent called asking me to come to his office to discuss it. I informed it was my time that was valuable as much as his, and he could come to my office. He asked for the order form from the company in CA, looked at it, and finally just said, what will it take to make you happy. This roof job was going to cost them close to $90,000 plus the damage inside. he was going nuts. believe it or not, the agent gets bonuses for not having many claims on his policies from customers.

I got what I wanted as well. New roof with aluminum sided decking, 30 year shingle, and the inside totally redone where the damage was, including the painting, ceilings and walls. I believe the final total was just under $30,000 they paid when they only offered $2,000.
