Hmm. lots of good advice, what can I add? Make an appointment and hand in your resume in person if you can. People will remember a face more that just reading about you. And dress professionally.
If you don't know anyone at the publishing company, get to know them. Ask your friends and/or instructors at the college if they know anyone in the company. Remember the rule of six-degrees? I'll bet you know more people than you think.
I currently work in an ER, but I knew someone in the Security department and got my foot in the door as an officer.

If you send your email remember to follow up with a telephone call.
If you choose to work for a temp agency don't do this too terribly long as most employers take only 30 seconds to skim over your resume and if they see 3 months here and 9 months there they immediately (wrong as it is) consider you a job hopper and not stable.
That's all I got except to wish you luck in this job market.
Remember - follow up, follow up, follow up.
