my definition of "hot" does include the whole package. someone can be drop dead beautiful on the outside and yet have a really ugly personality, thus nullifying any hotness in my eyes. to me, it's all in the way it's said. age doesn't have much to do with it.

I avoid complimenting a woman on her appearance, unless I am dating her, and she has obviously gone to some effort to look attractive, presumably somewhat for my benefit as well as her own desire to be attractive.
I find it "cheap", as if to suggest that her appearance is the only quality he has worthy of comment.
I may compliment her on an interesting piece of jewelry she is wearing, or if she has a particularly pleasant smile, or a combination of hair and eyes that catches my eye.
But, I won't use words like "hot", or "beautiful", or even "attractive".
If I do dare comment on her appearance, I'd chose terms like "striking", "intense", "piercing", or "fiery", as in, "Excuse me, but I've never before met someone with such striking fiery hair and piercing eyes."
Now, the interesting thing is that I am more likely to offer such a complement if she isn't particularly remarkably attractive otherwise, figuring that such a woman likely gets complemented and "hit upon" all day long.
I am far less likely to complement a stranger when I am dating someone, of course, so there is no misunderstanding my comment as a "come on".
I will be far less reserved complementing an existing female friend or aquaintance when she has obviously gone to some trouble. For example, if the barmaid at the place I play pool is dressed more suggestively than usual, I might actually say, "Damn, you're smokin' hot tonight! Hot date later, or just trolling for bigger tips?" Of course, she knows me, and knows that I'm not hitting on her.

I agree with the one who said it depends on what age it comes from, what follows those said words, plus the way it is worded. Use your gut instinct and you should be able to tell if the person is sincere, or if they are just looking for quick way to hook you. JMO- and I have to admit I am big on gut instinct. If it comes as the only words you receive then I would figure it to be another off the cuff comment, but if more words come after it in a mature manner, then I would take it for what it was. A compliment. (Me being humble as I slowly join the Dh site and forums.)

cmon people lets be honest here. Everyone doesn't so much mind being called hot! especially after 30, you can slice it anyway you want to, a little validation now and then can be comforting. Myself I dont think I've ever used the term, but that was my first thought when I saw Meta's pic. lol

I think a compliment is a compliment. Unless someone were particularly referencing parts of my body and just looking at me as a piece of meat, I'd take it as a compliment.

sweet, you're not the only who thinks about stuff like this. I agree with muffy. I detest being labeled as "sexy" or "hot". It automatically puts me on the defense thinking that the man in question is looking between my legs and NOT between my ears.
Being called "beautiful" or "pretty" by a man suggests to me that he is on the same intellectual level I am and I will definitely take the time to get to know him better.

Hmmm...I take it in context..
an email that says...
your so hot...wanna chat with me?
Ummmm...probably not....I will send a nice letter saying go meet people on the forums and make friends...
an email that says...
I read your profile, and I think we have a lot in common...Im really interested in such and such....and your pictures are hot!...
I would like to get to know you better....
Well, I will send the same letter...but Im probably more apt to make friends with number two email sender than number one...
But "you are beautiful, you have a beautiful smile"...ect...def. score way higher on the politeness scale than...
DAMN your hot baby!!!!
I mean...really...first impressions here, right?
