As she is carried across the sea, a man in a black mask pursues them. Vizzini orders Inigo to stop the masked man, but despite Inigo’s skill with a sword, he is defeated by the masked man. Next, Fezzik tries to stop him, but he chokes the giant out. And lastly, the masked man tricks Vizzini into drinking poison. As Prince Humperdinck pursues them in an attempt to rescue Buttercup, the masked man reveals to her that he is the Dread Pirate Roberts, the man who killed Westley. Enraged, she shoves him off a cliff, telling him to die. And Roberts replies, “As you wish!”

Buttercup realizes that the masked man is Westley, and the pair is reunited. Just as they are about to live happily ever after, Humperdinck catches up with them. Buttercup promises to marry him if he lets Westley go free, and he agrees. But Humperdinck does not keep his promise, and he sends Westley to the ‘Pit of Despair’ and tortures him. On the eve of Buttercup’s wedding, Inigo and Fezzik discover that Count Rugen, the man who is torturing Westley, is responsible for the death of Inigo’s father. The pair decides to go after him, but they figure that they will need Westley’s help. They arrive at the Zoo but Westley has apparently been tortured to death. Inigo takes him to a “miracle man” who manages to save his life after Westley breathes out the reason he should live. That reason? True love.

Westley, Inigo, and Fezzik invade the castle at the time of the wedding, and the wedding is postponed. Buttercup decides to kill herself, but before she manages to do so, Westley reveals himself to her. Humperdinck barges in and challenges Westley to a sword fight. Westley is still very weak, but he manages to convince Humperdinck to surrender. Humperdinck surrenders, and Westley leaves with Buttercup.

At the end of the story, Westley and Buttercup ride off into the sunset with their new friends, and they live happily ever after.
