The Classic Beauty and Talent of Audrey Hepburn

When you think of actresses with style, grace and beauty, one of the first that come to mind is Audrey Hepburn. Hepburn was an award winning actress who starred in several of the biggest movies in the 1940’s and 11950’s. During this time she appeared with some of the most famous leading men of the era.

Audrey Hepburn was born on May 4, 1929 in Ixelles, Belgium as Audrey Kathleen Ruston. Shortly after she was born her father added his mother’s surname so that her name became Hepburn-Ruston. Even though she was born in Belgium, Hepburn was a British citizen and attended schools in England. As a young child, Hepburn studied ballet and also enjoyed drawing.

In the late 1940’s and early 1950’s, Hepburn started to appear in movies and on the stage This led to her first big starring role in 1952 when she starred with Gregory Peck in “Roman Holiday.” It was also in 1952 when the 23 year old was engaged to James Hanson. However, despite planning the wedding, she had second thoughts and called off the wedding. Hepburn later married twice – First to actor Mel Ferrer and later to Andrea Dotti, an Italian Doctor.

After her Academy Award winning performance in Roman Holiday, Hepburn continued to make outstanding movies including “Sabrina” in 1954, “War and Peace” in 1956, “Love in the Afternoon” in 1957, “The Nun’s Story” in 1959, “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” in 1961 in which she starred as the ultimate party girl looking for love, Holly Golightly and “My Fair Lady” in 1964. Several of these movies were nominated for Academy Awards or Golden Globes. In fact, Audrey Hepburn is one of the few actors or actresses to win an Academy Award, Grammy Award, Tony Award and Emmy Award.

Hepburn continued to work in her later years until her death in 1993 at the age of 63. In addition to her outstanding career as an actress, she also donated her time and effort on behalf of UNICEF. In the later years, she dedicated her life to helping people in troubled lands and was named UNICEF’s Goodwill Ambassador.
