I actually like when someone actually reads my interests in my profile and initiates a conversation based on something that's there. Shows that they took the time to find out a little bit about me cause I put nothing in my description.

Sorry dear, that's another common strategy..skim the profile for an interest and then ask a question about it

Ok, here's a secret, OP.
Send ten women who are 8's or 9's this e-mail, and I bet you half of them respond.
"Hi, my name is {insert your name}, what is your name?
Also, do you like turtles?"
.
Don't ask - just do it!

Give us something to work with. Ask us something or tell us something neat about you or that you have going on so we can have a conversation. "can we chat?", is one of the worse ones. I want to send back a reply that says, I know I am capable of it, are you?

@ Jjay
Does this work for you??
I rarely send unsolicited emails anymore, but surprisingly, it did get alot of responses when I did use it.
Most were "Yes, I like turtles, why do you ask?" or something to that effect, and I'd go on to mention I only asked to break the ice, and voila, a conversation starts.
What did one lady post earlier - "give us something to work with"?
Well, "do you like turtles" is odd enough to catch their attention and make 'em think about something different than d*ck pics and how sexy guys think they are. I guess. I don't know why it was so successful, but it was.
Maybe because its so original and different? IDK?
Let's hijack OP's thread and take a poll:
Ladies (and gentlemen although any guy on here would likely respond to any lady that emailed him), would you respond to a simple message that said:
"Hi, my name is Jay, what is your name? And, do you like turtles?"

You have. Remember it was the day you took your profile picture. I'm sitting right next you (I'm the monkey). You had the picture taken and would not let me put clothes on first. Grrrrr.

I think I would like it if they commented on something on my profile or something I said in the forums. Chances are that's not going to happen.
My last SO sent me a humorous first message. It did the trick.

On a side note, not too long ago, I dated a lady that kept about a half dozen live turtles in her living room. You could fit two or three of 'em in your hand at once. She said they don't grow any bigger than that and called 'em her 'babies'.
Don't knock it til you try it!
Hey, watch your thumb! That tickles!

I received a different type of first message the other day.
He asked me if I was into doing, what was involved in the book, "Fifty Shades of Grey".
I missed an opportunity there. I should have asked him if he was as rich as the guy in the book. Based on his picture, I'm guessing no.

I wouldn't send a damn thing. It's not like they're going to respond to a perfectly written email. Especially if the guy is less than average looking.
